American Express Membership Rewards are pretty much like gold in my book.  You can convert them on a 1:1 ratio to many different airline programs, including my beloved Continental.  In that case you would get 50,000 Onepass miles.  You can also turn them into hotel points with several hotel chains, redeem them for gift cards to a variety of merchants, or use them like cash to pay for travel related expenses charged to your AMEX.  I recently used 4,000 Membership Rewards points to get The Man a $50 Home Depot gift card.  He was pretty excited.  🙂  I am relatively new to the AMEX Membership Rewards game, but trust me, they rock!  Not to mention AMEX has outstanding customer service and other great benefits associated with having their cards.

Right now they are running a deal where if you have no other AMEX charge card (not credit card – they are different) you can get 50,000 Membership Rewards points for signing up for their Gold Card and charging just $500 in the first three months.  (don’t freak – just charge things you would normally have bought anyways, like gas and groceries).   They are also waiving the annual fee for the first TWO years.  That is pretty rock star.  They also let you accumulate points at 2x when buying gas and groceries and 3x on airfare, so you can accumulate tons o points beyond the initial offer pretty quickly!

If your husband (or wife) already has a card like this, don’t worry that you missed out of this deal, just get one yourself!  If neither of you have one, then both sign up individually and double the rewards!!

I have no idea how long this deal will last, but it is a great starting off point if you are considering getting in on this free travel excitement!

In case you were curious, no, I do not get paid squat if you apply for this credit card.  I just think it’s a great deal and want you to get in on the points fun!
EDIT: Looks like this link to apply actually originated from an email sent to Columbia Business School students.  So, be warned that it isn’t 100% guaranteed to get you the 50,000 miles if you aren’t a business school student.  Historically, AMEX has been very good about honoring offers, so there is a 90% + chance that it will probably work out for you if you apply, but it may require some back and forth between you and AMEX.  Take screen shots of the offer and save them, just in case.  Read more about this at Flyertalk
