Last Minute Momma

I know sometimes at my house we just need a break, a change in routine, new scenario, new activities, something! It may seem crazy, but it can work out great for families to take advantage of last minute fares in order to shake things up. Of course you could use them for a mini-vacation (but that is crazy hard to do last minute with a toddler), but we like to use them to visit out of state relatives. For example, I know that a few times a year Continental will offer last minute specials from Houston to Wichita (where we have family) for about $139 round trip on their weekly last-minute fares. For whatever reason, Houston to Wichita often runs in the $400-500 dollar range for a non-stop flight when you book it the traditional way. As you can see, this last minute deal is a huge savings over the normal fare. Continental’s fares come out once per week either on Monday night or Tuesday. They offer round trip fares for the upcoming weekend at sometimes dramatically reduced rates.

Here are some examples from this week:

Houston to Greenville/Spartantville, SC $179 or 20,000 miles + $36
New York/Newark to Savannah, GA $139 or 17,500 miles + $36
New York Laguardia to Houston $218 or 22,500 miles + $36

Usually the fares range in price from $119 to just under $300 for some international fares. The international locations are typically to Canada and Central America.

To take advantage of these fares you have to fly out on that coming Saturday and return either that Monday or Tuesday. These are very restricted fares, so you really can’t make changes to them. We have a rough schedule of our family’s summer plans so that if one of these fares pops up for the cities we need, we can snag it! They sometimes sell out quickly. If you want to use them as we plan to, to visit family, you probably don’t have to worry about hotel expenses or last minute car rentals. You just tell your family the happy news that you are on your way! You also get to earn miles on these cheapo flights, so that is a double bonus! Many different airlines offer similar weekly specials, so check your favorite to get on their weekly mailing list so you don’t miss out!
