A Few Mini-Points

There are a few quick reminders and other tid-bits that I want to share with you guys on this beautiful Friday (at least it is beautiful here at my house!).

  • First and foremost, Happy Veteran’s Day.  The men and women who have served, are serving, and will serve deserve our utmost gratitude.  In my “day job” I often see first-hand how they are not always given the support they need when their service is over, so I at least want to take today to say “thank you”.  If you want to say “thank you” with your wallet, AAdvantage is offering 15 miles per dollar donated to the USO through today.  If you have a Chase Freedom card, you can also earn 5% cash back or a 5x Ultimate Rewards points bonus (depending on how you redeem and whether or not you have a Sapphire Preferred or Ink Bold card) for you donation as “charities” are one of the bonus categories this quarter.  (HT to this Milepoint thread)  That is indeed a “triple play”!
  • As you likely already know, today is the last day to take advantage of the amazing 50,000 point/$833 in Wanna Get Away credit sign-up offer on the Southwest credit card.  For domestic airline travel, if Southwest serves the cities you like to fly, that is the absolute best offer out here right now.  At least for non-fancy folks like me who are okay without First Class.  🙂
  • Frequent Miler has a good post up about how to use your Ultimate Reward points at a 2.4 cent per point value (anything over a 2 cent value is pretty good) by redeeming 5,000 Ultimate Reward points for one-day tickets to Universal Studios!  This can be a great option for families who are looking to use some points for a day of fun while keeping some hard-earned cash in their wallets.  I love the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card for the amazing flexibility that UR points offer!
  • FedEx is offering up to a 4,500 Delta SkyMiles bonus for FedEx shipments made through January 18, 2012.  I don’t know about you, but with family members scattered all over the country, I make a lot of shipments during the Holidays.  I am all for being rewarded for my shipments with some extra bonus miles!  (HT to TheTravelLoop)
  • I’m starting to really have some fun with Twitter (who knew?), so feel free to follow me @Mommy_Points.  I also love tweeting back and forth, so feel free to hit me up!  I am also still on Facebook, so you can feel free to find me there as well.

Okay, I think that is it for now.  I love having a day off from my day job to catch up on this sort of stuff!  It is 10:30AM CST and I am still in bed, under the covers, with pajamas on and a laptop in my lap.  Not a bad start to a long weekend.  Time to crawl out of bed and start prepping for our weekend adventure.  We are flying with Little C tomorrow and she is honestly so excited.  It is so so so cute to see her excitement about getting to go in an airplane!  That’s my daughter.  🙂

  1. MP, quick questions: today I used the links in Your Man’s post for personal and business apps for both me and my wife. After calling the reconsideration line, both of us were approved for the personal. I am waiting decision on the Business for both (they wouldn’t give me an answer today). Assuming we both get approved for the business, do you know if we can use the 10k balance transfer option to gain those last 10k miles needed to earn the companion pass? Excellent idea about waiting till 2012 for the first use of card. If this all works, we both have companion passes for 2012 and 2013. Thanks in part to you and The Man!! I’ve already taken my wife and 4 kids to Europe this year on points. And over thanksgiving we are all going to Hawaii!! So, thanks to you and all your fellow bloggers 🙂

    • @Ali, thanks a million for using my links. Congrats on the first two approvals! Good news on the balance transfer idea, the terms and conditions state:
You will also earn 1 point for each $1 of balance transfers for the first 90 days from your enrollment date in the program. You do not earn points on balance transfers after the first 90 days from your enrollment date in the program, cash advances, cash-like charges such as travelers checks, foreign currency, and money orders, any checks that are used to access your account, overdraft advances, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, or fees of any kind, including fees for products that protect or insure the balances of your account. Maximum point accumulation on balance transfers is 10,000 points during the first 90 days, which equates to $10,000 in balance transfers.

My fingers are crossed that everything works out!!

  2. Happy veterans day to you too…I loved this post, best part being the last couple of lines…May your daughter carry on your batten and help future mile/point junkies!!

    • @Vinay, it is pretty exciting to see her growing to love travel, airplanes, and hotels. Like a crazy person, I talk to her about points a lot, too. I really hope to capture her on video talking about her toy airplanes or about her upcoming flight on the “big airplane”. Though she has convinced herself the “big airplane” will be a pink and orange airplane, so that part may be a bit disappointing………

  3. From a service member who reads your blog everyday, thank you for the kind words.

Regarding AA’s partnership with USO, I also have another tip. There are AA gift cards that you can purchase in AA’s website that gives 10% of the total value of the gift card to the USO. For example, if you purchase a $500 gift card, AA will donate $50 to the USO. Pretty simple and I’ve done it every time. Since you are going to use the gift card to pay for flights anyway, this is a nice way to give back!

  4. Thanks MommyPoints! Love your blog. I don’t know how you find time to post so frequently given all the work and family responsibilities. 🙂
You mentioned using FedEx a lot around the holidays. As we quickly approaching that time of the year, I hope that mileage malls will be again offering some bonuses for shopping through online portals. I missed 1,500 United MP mile bonus that ended on 11/11/11 but hope something else will come up soon. I need to buy that Tumi luggage soon! 🙂
