As a fun (and also informative) way to round out 2011 miles and points collecting, I am doing a short series on some of the best promos and personal miles and points accomplishments of 2011.  There will be Starbucks prizes involved once I compile all of the best and worst of stories into one final 2011 post!  You can learn more about what this will look like and weigh in on your favorite airline promo in this post.

Today we will be focusing on the best hotel promo of 2011!  I have personally benefited from quite a few hotel promos this year.  While there was no Hyatt Faster Free Night promo this year, there were still some other solid promos.  My personal favorite this year was the Radisson 50,000 point offer.  This was my favorite offer primarily because of the simplicity (something important for families).  Just stay one night at a Radisson hotel and get enough points for a free night at any other Radisson in the world.  The points also posted very quickly after I completed my stay.  Perfect.

There were two other hotel promos that I also really liked.  I enjoyed the Starwood Preferred Guest stay three nights get one night free at a resort promo that ran over the summer.  I also did pretty well with the Hyatt Possibilities promo that ran during the late spring/early summer of this year.  This promo awarded 10,000 Gold Passport points for completing five nights.  You then earned 5,000 points for every two nights after the initial five.  Since my husband had a lot of Hyatt travel during that part of the year, it really worked out pretty well for us.

Okay, those were my favorites for the year.  Which hotel promos worked out best for your family?

  1. I took full advantage of the Starwood and Radisson promos mentioned, earning 9 Starwood free resort nights (used in Miami, Honolulu, and Peru) and 250,000+ Radisson points (pooled among family and friends).

Also great was scoring a free night at any Hilton property worldwide with their Twitter free night giveaway. I only regret not recruiting friends to participate in that one.

  2. I really enjoyed the Starwood promotion from this summer where you earned one free resort night for every three stays… I just finished using the 2 nights I earned from that promo; one was used at the W in Fort Lauderdale and the other at the W in South Beach. I really got my money’s worth because those 2 free night award stays helped me get my last couple of SPG stays in this year to requalify for Platinum status thanks to Starwood’s change in their program rules in October, and it was also nice to be able to try a resort night at a hotel that was so high priced that I wouldn’t have gotten to stay at otherwise, namely the W South Beach. Finally it was a welcome break for myself and my husband to use those two nights to relax while we were in Florida unexpectedly helping to care for a relative who was ill. Thanks, Starwood and MP’s!!!

  3. We did really well with the Marriott MegaBonus this year. This was the silver lining with Storm Alfred — we stayed at Marriotts for 10 days during the storm while out of power, and that meant we maxed out the promotion with 4 free nights. Thanks, Marriott!

  4. Hi MP:
My favorite hotel promo this year was the Club Carlson – Radisson 50k promo. I signed for it the first day and the wife and I stayed out in Des Plaines near O’Hare. Between the points for joining the Club, and the extra 1K for joining TGI Fridays through a CC email link, I’m up to 62,625 points and so far I’ve stayed one night (I status matched my Marriott Silver). Here’s the point breakdown:
    Dec 8, 2011 Earn Radisson Hotel Chicago O’Hare – Dec 4, 2011 to Dec 5, 2011 – Radisson – Des Plaines , IL US Points|Room Earning 20 Points per USD 2,100
    Dec 8, 2011 Earn Radisson – Des Plaines , IL US Points|Silver 25% Room Points Bonus 525
Dec 8, 2011 Earn Radisson – Des Plaines , IL US Points|Radisson Big Night Giveaway 50,000 Points Bonus 50,000
Dec 8, 2011 Earn Radisson – Des Plaines , IL US Points|Online Booking Silver Member Bonus Points 2,000
Dec 8, 2011 Earn Radisson – Des Plaines , IL US Points|Welcome Next Stay 2000 Bonus Points 2,000
Dec 1, 2011 Earn T.G.I. Fridays Stripes Enrollment Bonus 1,000
    Oct 28, 2011 Adjust Adjustment – Discretionary Award 5,000

    It’s a pretty great program!

  5. .
The Club Carlson 50K Giveaway has to be the top. Not only on its own but as a package deal with other giveaways. I was not a member before November, nor was my wife. We both signed up through a link that gave us Silver status and signed up for the promo.
    .
My wife booked a local Radisson with a 25% off offer for a total of less than $65 and we took our 3-yo for a hotel night to enjoy the pool the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Between Silver Status, Online Booking, 20X points, Welcome Next Stay bonus, and Big Night Giveaway, she got 55,688.
    .
I booked a prepaid night in Orlando for the night before our Family Disney adventures at a Radisson that cost less than $60 (plus $10 resort fee) and netted me 55,294 points.
    .
We both signed up for the free Accor Platinum status (http://milepoint.com/forums/threads/another-working-free-platinum-status-deal.22936/) and sent it in to Club Carlson to match us to Gold. My wife got matched but I did not, although I have tried again and may yet get free Gold.
    .
So we went from nothing to almost 111,000 points and Gold/Silver status for about $140 on hotels we actually found useful. Those points will come in handy in Europe next summer.

  6. Thanks for the tip about the 50K offer. I was staying for business anyway, so it cost me nothing to get those 50,000 (plus the 1,000 for booking online and the 2,360 for actually staying).

  7. The SPG free resort night was my favorite. The second favoriate was the Radisson 50k points. And the Marriott would be my least favoriate since it’s only 2 free nights for cat 1-4 hotel.

  8. .
And for worst, I would have to go with the Best Western Facebook Wheel of Misfortune promo. My wife and I both signed up for Best Western Rewards, spun the wheel and got . . . 100 points!! Whooo hoooo! I got an additional 100 points for referring her.
    .
So, if we were to pool our points, assuming that you can, we are only 6200 points away from a $25 Applebee’s Gift Card!!
    .
After they figured out “Hey, by giving lots of people the minimum award we didn’t even give away all of the points!” they reopened it but I missed out on rounding us off to an even 500.
    .
Will we ever use Best Western? No. At least give away enough for people to get something out of it. FAIL.

  9. Not sure if this counts as a “hotel promo,” but per Rick’s info on FTG, I got in on 2 Hilton credit cards for something like 90K or more, and at the same time, got the Hawaiian airlines card for 35K with them. Hawaiian air miles will transfer to HHonors at 1 to 2, so all told, my take should be about 165K HHonors points. If I upgrade to the Surpass card, which comes with Hilton Gold…wow! That could make for some fine vacations in the coming year!

  10. As for worst promotion of the year, I’m going with the Starwood Foursquare checkin. You got 250 Starwood points for checking into a Starwood hotel that you had to have a reservation at or have checked into. So the promotion was very limited in its appeal. And I did do the promotion, then it didn’t post and it took several calls to Starwood to get my 250 points!
Looks to me like Starwood is not quite ready for social media!

  11. Agreed with most above — the Radisson 50K promo for one night stay must be the best/most lucrative promo. I also liked SPG’s double/triple points for Thu/Fri/Sat stays. I’m Gold with SPG, and for one Thu night stay got almost 1000 points.

  12. The Priority Club Crack the Case promo is the best hotel promo ever. I had to open 5 cases ( did one mattress run at $70 but otherwise everything else was at no additional cost) and that netted me 245,000 priority club points. With those points I stayed one week in The Twin Cities at the Crown Plaza on the 5000 per night pointsbreak offer and one week in Colorado Springs at the 5000 per night pointsbreak offer. Still have a lot of points and they don’t expire.

  13. Club Carlson 50k promo was my favorite. For less than $200 my husband and I accumulated 110,000 points. Even better, we would have had to spend the money on two hotel nights anyway, so the money spent wasn’t spent just for the purpose of earning points.

  14. Chase Marriott worked great for me. I missed out on the 70k bonus one, so I applied for the 50k bonus with the 1 free night and $75 statement credit. Got the card, made a purchase, and got the $75 statement credit. I read one of the blogs that that 70k link was still alive, so I secure messaged Chase and asked them to bump me to 70k. They DID! Did it for my wife too! So I got 70k points on both cards for a total of 140k points, $150 statement credit, and 2 free nights in category 4 hotel!
