Taking a Road Trip? Get $5 Back on Gas From Amex and Shell

I haven’t paid attention to the American Express “Link, Like, Love” promos in a little while, but recently two promos caught my attention on Facebook.  One of those could be helpful if you are doing a little 4th of July road trip.  Once you have linked your American Express card to your Facebook account and added the promo to your card, just spend $25 on your linked Amex at a Shell station through 7/31/12 and get a $5 statement credit.  Even if Shell isn’t your normal gas station, getting $5 off your $25 gas purchase is pretty good.

The other promo that caught my eye is a $25 statement credit after spending $75 on your linked Amex at Ticketmaster.  We are about to purchase some Radio City Music Hall tickets for when we are in NYC in December, so this is perfect.  Credit cards can sometimes do more than just earn miles and points – they can even save you money!

  1. Do we know if this works at convenience stores at Shell stations? Perhaps buying a gas card or stocking up on supplies would be good for those without cars…

  2. Wow, Amex just keeps giving. I’m heading over to Ticketmaster right now. I can justify the (over)priced tickets if I know I’m getting $25 back.

  3. A few other deals you can find are

    – Spend $25 or more, get $5 back at Shell
    – $10 off $20 purchase at Movietickets.com
    – Spend $75 or more, get $25 back at Ticket Master

    you can also tweet just Tweet #amexmovietix for movietickets.com. Also #amexshell for $5 / $25 Shell offer, and #amexTM25 for Ticketmaster $25 / $75 deal.

    All combined: #amexmovietix #amexTM25 #amexshell

  4. @JW, I don’t know for sure. I assume it would work since you can pay for gas inside, but that is just a guess.
    @Acker, ha ha, exactly.
    @Duc, there are several – thanks for adding to the list! They really seem to have constant deals these days. 😉

  5. How do I link a different card? I clicked on the link and it just gave me the option of adding to my synched card, but I’m currently using another card to meet a spending requirement. Thanks!

    • @Michael, I had to do that today, too since I no longer had the card I synched. For anyone else, it was toward the bottom of the screen and said “unsync”. 🙂

  6. To maximize savings, I have one AX card for twitter offers, another AX card for facebook Link, Like, Love offers, and yet another AX card for foursquare offers (although these are kind of rare.)

    So now, you can buy 1 $75 ticket from ticketmaster on each AX, and you will save $50 total.

    I wonder if these new offers will pop up every quarter, since July just kicked off.

  7. @Tim2, I’m sure there are risks every time you enter credit card info online. Only you can decide what is worth it for you. I haven’t heard of any issues from this, but I certainly can’t make that decision for you. 😉
    @David, good plan!

  8. Such pain. First, I thought I couldn’t get points for a rare Ticketmaster purchase. (Not true — Ticketmaster gift cards at the grocery store last quarter, 5x UR with Chase Freedom.) Then I thought there were no coupon codes for dollars off. So the pair of tickets at $85 apiece could have been two single tickets at $60 apiece and 850 points!

    At least I switched some purchases from Menard’s to Lowe’s this quarter.
