Hope you are having a good weekend whether you are curled up at home on your couch (or bed) with some coffee, or are out and about half a world from home.  Today I am keeping it short and simple with some updates from the world of miles and points:

  • In case you missed it, I have a post up on the Travel Channel blog about how to still obtain tickets to the Olympic games from the official ticket source.  Only a few more weeks until I head over the pond to go to a few events myself.  Hurray!  I really hope that some of you are able to make the trip as well.
  • American Airlines just announced a promotion that will earn up to 30,000 bonus AAdvantage miles on roundtrip flights flown between September 4th and November 15th. This is only good for travel booked July 18th though September 15th and not on reservations ticketed prior to that time.  Five roundtrips are required in order to get the full 30,000 mile bonus.  There are some fare exclusions and other details, so I recommend heading to Deals We Like for more info on this promo.  Getting some bonus miles for a flight you were going to take anyway is pretty nice!
  • Thanks to @rhinodh for alerting me that the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Card will now have no foreign transaction fees starting on August 1st. While that is great news for those who use this card out of the US, I would argue that if you are using this card much for regular spending that you should strongly consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card instead.  Even if you want all of the points to be transferred to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio, the Sapphire Preferred card still makes more sense as it earns 2x on dining and travel (including, but not limited to, Southwest Airlines tickets) whereas the Southwest card only earns 1x on all purchases except Southwest tickets and their hotel and car rental partners, where it earns 2x. The sign-up bonus still makes the Southwest card a good option to obtain, but it really isn’t the best card to put your spending on – with or without foreign transaction fees.  That said, I am glad to see fewer and fewer cards carry foreign transaction fees.
  • Don’t forget to sign-up for miles and points seminars.  MileValue.com contacted me about a free seminar he will be hosting in Honolulu on July 21st.  He is a fantastic wealth of knowledge – especially regarding free stopovers on award tickets!  If you will be in that area on July 21st, I strongly encourage you to go and hear what he has to say.  I also wanted to give an update that the Chicago Seminars in October has less than 50 tickets remaining.  Stop dragging your feet if you are considering attending that event.  ;)  Finally, fellow BoardingArea bloggers Delta Points and Frequent Miler are both speaking at the Ann Arbor Do on July 21st.  Lots of great opportunities to meet fellow miles and points junkies and hopefully learn a thing or two.

Disclosure:  I do receive a commission if you are approved for a credit card using one of my links.  As always, thanks for your support!
