I may be the only one who benefits from this post, but I think my brain is still recovering from holiday mush, and I have recently found myself having trouble remembering which card to use for which purchases now that we are into a new year and a new quarter. At least when not using Visa gift cards or meeting a spending requirement – that part is easy! In case you are in the same boat, here is a quick reminder of some of the currently available first quarter bonus categories so you can be sure to maximize as many of your purchases as possible. Many of these temporary bonus categories are capped, so this is not an unlimited free-for-all.
Chase Freedom Visa (activate bonus categories here):
5x Gas stations
5% Movie theaters
5x Grocery stores
5x Utility payments (phone/cable/satellite/standard utilities)
5x Movie theaters
I don’t currently have a Discover card, so I’m still using my Chase Sapphire Preferred Card to earn 2x at restaurants (other than Starbucks that goes on Freedom) and some of my travel expenses for 2x on those. I also prefer to use my new Ink Plus Business Card card to earn 5x Ultimate Rewards on phone, cable, and satellite expenses over the US Airways card. That is due in part to setting those payments up on auto-pay, and not wanting to bother changing them when the temporary bonus period is up on the US Airways card (I’m lazy/busy).
All non-bonused expenses that I don’t put on a gift card go on my United Club card since it gives me 1.5 United miles per dollar which isn’t too shabby. Word on the street is the bonus categories are changing on the Amex Hilton cards, so that may impact some folk’s spending patterns in the near future as well.
I was totally blanking on some of these bonus categories, but I think I am clear now – hopefully you are as well.
