April Shopping Portal Payouts

Welcome to April (be on the lookout for April Fool’s Jokes today!).  As I do each month, I want to summarize some of the payout changes in the online shopping portals.  I have historically focused on the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, but want to also focus on the top payouts that can be found in some of the other portals.  Sadly we haven’t seen too many “knock your socks off” payouts in the Ultimate Rewards portal in recent months, so it is worth digging into some of the others as well.  In case you aren’t overly familiar with how the Chase Ultimate Rewards shopping portal works, then head to this post for detailed instructions.  While the Ultimate Rewards portal doesn’t always have the best payout (or the most retailers), they do seem to have some of the better customer service when something goes wrong with the points posting, so keep that in mind as well.

The payouts within the Ultimate Rewards portal can vary based on the type of Ultimate Rewards card you log in with (Chase Freedom, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Ink Plus® Business Card, etc.), but this month doesn’t see many substantial differences between the different cards, so I will just list the payouts all together.  Here are some of the payouts I saw at some popular retailers:

Ultimate Rewards:

Brooks Brothers 8x (from 3x)

Sunglass Hut 8x (from 6x)

Sears 4x (down from 5x)

Brookstone 8x (from 6x)

Kohl’s 10x (no change)

Magazines.com 30x (no change)

Lowes 5x (no change – but remember the Freedom Q2 bonus category is 5x at Lowes, so this stacks)

Teleflora 15x (up from 10x)

Children’s Place 4x (up from 2x)

MLBShop.com 5x (up from 4x)

Sephora 8x (stayed the same)

AAdvantage Shopping:

Macy’s 6x

Rosetta Stone 14x

AT&T Wireless 6500 (2 year subscription + phone w/ several restrictions)

drugstore.com 8x

JCPenney 8x

Lowes 6x

OfficeMax 6x

United MileagePlus Shopping:

FTD.com 20x

Madewell 4x

Maui Jim 9x

Melissa and Doug 4x

SIRUS Satellite Radio 4x

US Airways Dividend Miles Storefront:

Home Depot 4x

Tom’s Shoes 6x

Southwest Rapid Rewards

e-Bags 12x

British Airways E-Store

Drugstore.com 8x

ShoeBuy.com 12x

Remember to compare these rates to other portals to make sure you are getting the best payout possible.  You can use a site like evreward.com to quickly compare different portal payout rates for a given retailer.  However, especially for a large purchase, I would manually compare the portals myself to make sure I am getting 100% accurate info on the payouts and any possible bonuses.  Also, in recent months we have seen these payouts fluctuate some within the month, so don’t necessarily count on them remaining constant until May.

As always, an easy way to view all the changes for the Ultimate Reward and United MileagePlus Shopping payouts for the month is to head to Hiker T’s site. Did I leave out any good payouts you spotted?

  1. I always check every month for the new mall earnings. Sephora was actually only 5 points per dollar last month at Ultimate Rewards Mall. It was 8 points per dollar at United Mileage Plus shopping for United Explorer card holders.

Apologies for the link, but I only remember because I included screenshots of both mall earnings in my instructions on earning miles at Sephora last month: http://themilesprofessor.com/2013/03/03/sephora-miles-rewards-coupons/

Anyway, Ultimate Rewards Mall points post much faster than United Mileage Plus Mall so this is particularly good for Sephora earnings.

  2. Always check prices being asked at the online retailer using the shopping mall portal and not using the shopping mall portal. Be aware that some retailers adjust prices upward when the retailer is entered through a portal.

  3. Hi MP,
When oen shops through UR with Ink at Staples, do you get 5pts/dollar in addtion to whatever the points are for Staples that month?
    Thanks

  4. It doesn’t seem that the BA Avios shows up at sites like evrewards. I do buy through drugstore a lot and they have the best rate currently considering that Avios are typically more valuable than miles for domestic travel.

  5. Miles Professor, thanks for that update!
ADK, interesting. I have never seen that in the online retailers I frequent (PB, Gap Kids, J. Crew, etc.). What type of retailers have you seen that sneaky trick with?
    Deb, you got it!
DaninSTL, yeah the BA site stays under the radar a tad. It is worth checking out if Avios are useful for you (as they are for me).

  6. @mommypoints — I have the seen the price fluctuations at eBags especially. They have a sale for non-portal people but regular prices for portal people.

  7. applezz13, I bet Frequent Miler or one of his readers has some recent updates on if that works.
Matt, it started the month at 5x in March, but then did drop to 3x, so going back to 4x is good…in a round about way.
Dave, good to know. Glad most retailers don’t differentiate.

  8. applezz13, I had the same question about using Lowe’s gift cards to purchase other gift cards in store. I called my local Lowe’s and was told no. Lady said it was not store policy, they would if they could, but registers won’t allow it.

  9. Just got 10x at Kohl’s on things I had been putting off until this month. Although, a little ticked that two things I needed I can’t buy in store and aren’t available for parcel shipping–meaning if I want them, I’m stuck paying truck shipping. I am waiting on those items for now…
