Current Hotel Promo Updates (SPG + Hilton)

Yesterday kicked off the start of the second quarter Hilton HHonors promo and today Starwood Preferred Guest announced their next bonus points promotion.  With the exception of Hilton, most hotel programs do not operate their promotions on a tight quarterly schedule.  It is common to see gaps (sometimes a couple of months long) between promos.  So, I am pretty pleased that the next SPG promo will start on May 1 after just a brief gap from the end of the current promo on April 15th.

I have updated my Promos page and recommend that you keep an eye on that list for an easy to read and up to date summary of the major hotel promos.  Additionally, here are some details about the two newest promos.

SPG Double Take (as posted on Milepoint):

Details:  Earn double Starpoints on all eligible stays.  Plus, earn 500 additional bonus Starpoints for stays booked through our spg.com mobile site, the SPG App for iPhone or the SPG App for Android.  Stay earnings are at over 1,000 participating hotels and resorts worldwide (a list of properties that opted out can be found on our Double Take page). The booking bonuses are eligible at all Starwood hotels and resorts that participate in the SPG program, regardless of whether or not the hotel is participating in this promotion.  Earnings are unlimited, and the registration window will begin late April.

Dates:  May 1 through July 31, 2013.

Hilton HHonors Daily Grand Promotion:

Details: Earn 1,000 bonus points for every weekday night and 2,000 bonus points for every weekend night.  Weekend night defined as as Friday, Saturday, or Sunday for all regions except for hotels within the Middle East and Africa where “weekend night” is defined as Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.

Dates: April 1 – June 30, 2013

I am happy that both promos exist, but neither is very exciting.  I am hoping that some hotel chain will want to knock one out of the park this summer with an exciting promo (like Club Carlson did last year), but I’m not holding by breath.  I expect in the coming weeks we will see more promotions announced by other chains, but my gut feelings is that they will mostly be on-par with these type of promotions.  Better than nothing, but nothing to get worked up about.  Someone prove me wrong!!

While we are on the topic, remember that the current SPG promo that awards 2,000 bonus Starpoints for every four eligible nights (up to 8,000 bonus Starpoints and 16 nights) from 1/15 – 4/15 ends in two weeks.  If you have some flexibility in your travel plans, it may make sense to see where you stand and try to end on a multiple of four nights.  Also remember that if you make it all the way to 20 eligible nights, you earn an additional 10,000 bonus Starpoints.

  1. I already booked a stay in Sheraton HK for July a month or so ago. I have gold SPG status. Do I get double pts? I’m a little confused how this works. Do I have to do anything?

  2. Nick, sadly, award nights rarely count toward any promotion with any chain.
Dave, you just need to be sure and register when the registration window opens. That’s it and you should be set.

  3. Wow am I ever zero for three on Starwood. I have three different hotels booked that are Starwood and all three are on the opt-out list. Arghh!

  4. It’s super frustrating that SPG has many hotels that are “opt outs”. I share your frustration as many of these properties would have been of great help.

Especially frustrating when most hotels in the UAE always seem to be not included in any promos.

  5. MP, so even if my hotel stay was already booked (before the promotion was announced), as long as I register on time, I’ll get double points? That’s the difference between 6 vs 3 pts/dollar for a $750 stay.

  6. I am trying to book a Sheraton hotel room for my family of 3. It seems that SPG points redemptions are only possible for a room of 2 adults? What about families traveling with children?

  7. Fishing4Deals, it totally depends on the property, the room, the country and what is available. When we were traveling through Germany, Austria and Czech Rep, last summer, we had to book two rooms most of the time for our two kids. It’s just the way it is. If you have a young child or toddler, call the hotel or SPG directly and ask. What is available online isn’t always what is available by other means.
