I love almost all types of travel, but no type is more rewarding (or more work) than family travel. Starting last year, several of my cousins decided to start getting together once a year for family trips – just as our parents did for us when we were young. Last year we went to the Outer Banks in North Carolina, and this year we headed toward the mountains in North Carolina outside of Asheville.

We have a huge porch, rocking chairs, wine, coffee bean grinder, gourmet kitchen, nearby wineries, scenic overlooks, fantastic hammock, and a beautiful house thanks to Vacation Rental by Owner. What could be more relaxing, right?!

Well, insert five children ages three and younger and you lose much of the relaxation factor, but you gain lots of laughs, giggles, and memories. Full report on this beautiful part of the country forthcoming, but here is a peak on what this type of trip looks like!

  1. Looks like a great trip! Would you be willing to share a link or the VRBO # for the cabin you rented? We’re considering a similar trip and it’d be nice to look into this particular cabin as it seems lovely and has already been vetted by your family!

  2. The NC mountains are great! We were just in Cashiers, NC a few weeks ago and it’s so peaceful. Your beach trip last year looks like it was a lot of fun. For your next large family beach trip, I encourage you to checkout Ocean Isle Beach, NC, a quiet family beach. We have an 8BR oceanview house that is very kid-friendly (across our 4 families, 5 of the cousins are age 5 or under). The house has a private pool that we heat for our guests at no additional charge. The island has a great kids museum and playground. Wilmington (ILM) and Myrtle Beach (MYR) airports are both about 45 minutes away. And we take MC and VISA, so you can earn points! http://www.vrbo.com/258457 If we can help, let me know!

  3. PH, I could blame exhaustion or some tricky play on words on the mountains, but really I’m just terrible mixing up that word. Must try harder next time! đŸ˜‰
Tara, it was great and was a great house for what we paid. I’ll post more pics of the house and the link soon. I do recommend the house and we did get it via VRBO.

  4. We just spent the holiday weekend at a house in Crested Butte with three other families – there were EIGHT kids under the age of 5 – ALL BOYS. It was a lot of fun and we’re already talking about going back next year – Crested Butte is simply stunning in the summer.
