I had a nice surprise letter waiting in the mailbox today from Amex outlining that my The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN has a new bonus category effective September 16th.

Starting September 16, 2013, you can earn 2x points on US purchases made directly from select computer hardware, software, and cloud computing providers.

The letter goes on to inform that a full list of providers could be found at americanexpress.com/rewards-info.  Here is the full list provided at that site.

  • Apple
  • CDW
  • Dell
  • HP
  • IBM
  • Intuit
  • Lenovo
  • Microsoft
  • Newegg
  • Oracle
  • Rack Space
  • Sage Software
  • Salesforce.com
  • Symantec
  • Tiger Direct
  • You will NOT earn additional rewards if the purchase is made through a third-party (including resellers and online marketplaces) or through a third-party payment account.

Recently my family has been on an Apple rampage, so this is a very welcome bonus category for us, and presumably for many other small business cardholders.

The interesting thing is that thus far the language on the above linked website indicates this bonus is only for select Business Gold Rewards Cards, and cardholders are instructed to call the number on the back of their card for more information.  However, the same is said for the other bonus categories of airfare, shipping, advertising, etc. and yet those seem to be pretty widespread and consistent on Business Gold Reward Card accounts.  My assumption is this benefit is also very widespread, or will be shortly, but it is safest to call and make sure it is applicable to your account (if you don’t receive a letter) to be 100% sure.

I am very happy to see an added benefit to this card, especially since it is one that I think many of us will use from time to time!  As a refresher, here are the other bonus categories on this card.

3x points on airfare purchased directly from the airlines

2x points on US purchases for advertising in select media

2x points on US purchases at gas stations

2x points on US purchases for shipping

1x points on other purchases

There is a $100,000 cap in each of the bonus categories for the bonus payout per year.  I will still prefer to buy my Apple iPhones via AT&T on my Ink Plus® Business Card or Ink Bold® Business Card as they have then paid out at 5x Ultimate Rewards points thanks to the bonus category of cell phone expenses on that card, but my other Apple purchases that I make directly from the Apple store will go on my Amex Business Gold Rewards card to take advantage of this new bonus category.  As always, do your comparison shopping, and if you can get the computer product you want from an ineligible third-party a good price, and that is your preferred method of purchase, then I wouldn’t change course just for a few extra points.  Regardless of where you make your purchase, be sure to go through an online shopping portal whenever possible for even more bonus points!

Did you get the letter from Amex?  What do you think of the new bonus category?

Disclosure: I do receive a commission if you are approved for a credit card using one of my affiliate links.  As always, thanks for your support.

    • They are different bonus systems so one doesn’t necessarily apply to the other. Just thought it might be helpful if you want to potentially earn MR for Amazon. 😉

  1. if anyone does know anything about earning points for Amazon on purchases on the Amex Business PRG card please let me know. (types of purchases or products)
