Quick note to say the Southwest 50,000 point credit card sign-up offer is back! You get 50,000 points after spending $2,000 in the first three months. There is a $99 annual fee for the Premier version of the card. This is a huge offer as 50,000 Southwest points are worth over $833 in “Wanna Get Away” fares, and get you almost half-way to the Companion Pass that allows your designated companion to fly with you for free just thanks to the points that come from hitting the sign-up bonus on the card. I wrote about the Companion Pass over the summer when these 50k point offers last appeared, so I highly encourage you to read that post if you aren’t familiar with the Companion Pass. Below is the link to the Premier Version of the card, though the other versions like the business cards, and the Plus personal with the lower annual fee seem to also be displaying on the lower portion of that linked landing page also at 50,000 points!

That said, if you do decide to use this credit card sign-up bonus to help get you to the Companion Pass (off-label benefit, but it has been working for quite a while) then I would think about the timing of when the pass is good. If you get the card now the points will be working toward a 2013 Companion Pass. If you get it later in 2013 and cross the $2,000 spending threshold and trigger the bonus in early 2014 then your points will count toward next year’s Companion Pass. The Companion Pass is good the year you earn it, and the next calendar year, so make your decisions strategically. The language on the public version of the deal says available until October 30th, so if you applied around that time and then finished hitting your spending limit in early January 2014, you would have the points count toward the 2014 Companion Pass. That said, if need 50k-ish more points toward earning your Companion Pass in 2013, this could be a great way to do it if you act quickly.
