It’s been a little while since we had some of the dynamite bonuses from shopping via a shopping portal online, however recently we have been seeing a little uptick in some payouts.  Today there is a pretty exciting payout from Sears via the United MileagePlus Shopping portal.  You can get up to 21x miles/points per dollar at Sears through tomorrow (10/9), but you have to have a couple of credit cards in order to get the payout that high.

Sears 16x Mommy PointsThose without the United MileagePlus Card (or other United co-branded) and without the Chase Freedom: 12x United miles

Those without the United MileagePlus Card but with the Chase Freedom: 12x United miles + 5x Ultimate Reward points (if you have registered for the 5x 4th quarter bonus of department stores)

Those with the United MileagePlus Card but without the Chase Freedom: 16x United miles

Those with the United MileagePlus Card + the Chase Freedom: 16x United miles + 5x Ultimate Reward points (if you have registered for the 5x 4th quarter bonus of department stores)

That means you will earn anywhere from 12x – 21x miles and points depending on which of the above mentioned cards you have.  You need to have a co-branded United card to get the higher payout via the shopping portal, but you need to pay with the Chase Freedom if you want to take advantage of that 5x bonus at department stores (up to $1,500 max).

Just to point how how lucrative this is…say that you need to buy $2,000 in appliances from Sears and you have both a United and Freedom card.  That means that you will earn 32,000 United miles via the 16x MileagePlus Shopping promo and 8,000 Ultimate Reward points from using your Freedom to pay (maxing out the 5x).  That means you will earn 40,000 miles and points for a purchase you were going to make anyway!  I like that kind of math.

Note that it says in the terms that Gift Cards are eligible as of 10/4/13.  I am not a gift card expert by any stretch, but I do know that once upon a time you could earn miles via the portals on both Sears e-gift cards and the physical gift cards.  However, in recent months only the physical Sears cards have been earning miles when purchased via the portals.  I’m not sure if this 10/4 date means that e-gift cards are again eligible or not, but it is a pretty good sign since it doesn’t spell out that they aren’t.  There are no guarantees though so proceed with caution and report back with results so we know for future promos!  Also be aware that according to Frequent Miler (who is a gift card expert) purchasing gift cards via Sears with your Freedom card likely won’t work for the 5x as it is processed by Kmart, not Sears.

Gift card stuff aside, I recommend racking your brain to see if you actually need any real merchandise from Sears.  I’ll be browsing their site today to see what our family may need in the near future.  Let us know what you find!  This is one of those deals that is worth giving some thought to as it has never been this high in my memory.  Thanks to Frequent Miler for Tweeting about this deal!

Here are the terms for Sears purchases via the United MileagePlus Shopping Portal:

Not eligible on purchases made with coupon or discount codes that are not found on this site.  Only products with “Add to Cart” button are eligible.  Gift Cards eligible as of 10/4/13. Not eligible on Home Delivery Charges, Auto Services, PA and Installation, Master Protection Agreements, Take With, Protection Plans, Sears auctions, Landsend.com, PartsDirect, Sears Canada, Portrait, Craftsman, Kenmore or Outlet purchases. Sears Marketplace products with “Go to Site” button are not eligible. Not eligible on Sold by Kmart items or any other licensed partners. Any return, exchange or other adjustment made at a physical store location for an on-line purchase may result in your purchase being deemed ineligible.

  1. Keep in mind that when you order gift cards from Sears, it actually goes through k-Mart, so the 5x trick may not work with freedom, other than that, it’s a very solid promotion, best I’ve seen. Thank you mommy points, loved your posts!

  2. Thanks MP. Great information! Plus let’s not forget that Sears also has the Shop Your Way Rewards and lots of coupons once you login.

  3. Ultra Plus Laundry Detergent w/ Stain Fighter, 125 Loads is on sale for $7.99 (half off). Sign up for the 90 day trial of Max Shipping and they’ll ship these heavy boxes for free!

  4. Plink offers 300 points ($3 in gift cards) for every $50+ transaction at Sears too.

It says gift cards are OK, but all reports on Frequent Miler are that e-gift certificates don’t earn points and physical gift cards are sold thru Kmart. So I’m not sure how that would work out.

  5. The big questions are 1) whether or not purchasing E-gift cards will get points, and 2) whether we can double dip with this using that E-gift card. If I remember correctly, the UR portal doesn’t give points for purchasing E-gift cards but does give points for physical gift cards, but the UR portal doesn’t have the wording that includes “gift cards” that the MP portal has. Purchasing a physical gift card won’t help here so much because it’ll take days before it arrives, and the promo will be over. Getting 24-32x United miles would be awesome!!

  6. Also, while not as popular as the points and miles cards, the Citi Dividend MasterCard is offering 5x cash back on department stores and the Discover card is offering 5x cash back on online purchases. Must register first.

  7. Careful with the gift cards. The T&C in the email that went out specifically states that the offer is not eligible on gift cards, whereas the T&C in the portal specifically states that gift cards are eligible. So YMMV.

For the record, here is the T&C from the email:

Sears.com: Not eligible on purchases made with coupon or discount codes that are not found on this site. Only products with “Add to Cart” button are eligible. Not eligible on gift cards, gift certificates or any other similar cash equivalents.

  8. I was looking into buying a DSLR on Sears website, it says “Sold by Cameta Camera”. Would it still be eligible to earn all the miles on Freedom and Mileage plus? Thank you

  9. I made sure to take a screenshot of the portal wordage and my completed order, just in case the bonus is not credited on gift cards (did not go nuts though). I think there would be a strong case that unless they can prove you read the email, then the T&C on the website should rule. For example, my email did arrive until 11:43 am, AFTER I placed my order.

  10. also, what if I buy the sears GC at Sears with Freedom and then go back into MP portal to pay with Sears GC ? does the math adds more or less ?

  11. @choi From my experience, you do not have to pay with the United card. I regularly use the MP shopping links to buy from iTunes for 2X, and I usually have a balance in my iTunes account from gift cards. I always get points credited.

  12. The hubby and I were just talking last night about how we would love to get a new fridge and oven. This might give us the push we need to buy at least one of them!

    • @Kayla what is your price-difference-threshold for buying an item for more $$ @ sears versus buying it somewhere else cheaper for an up-to-21points/$ premium?

if a fridge costs $100 @ hhgregg, would you buy it here for $110? $120? $130?

  13. -I do not pay with my United card when shopping via the MileagePlus shopping portal and still the miles post to United just fine.
-The 21x comes from 16x via United + 5x via paying with the Chase Freedom. You will only be able to earn 21x via that method.
-The gift card thing is a risk. The website terms say one thing, the terms in an email (that I’m not sure I even got) say another. E-gift cards seem to be issued by sears, but haven’t been paying out portal points (though would get Freedom points). Physical gift cards have been paying our portal points, but probably not Freedom points as they are processed by Kmart. You will not know how the gift card thing will shake out until it is all over. Double dipping with e-gift cards may be very lucrative, or it may be a total bust. You have to decide if that risk is worth it.
-Shopping for merchandise you actually need is the only sure-fire bet.
-I value 21x United/UR points conservatively at a tad over 30 cents on the dollar spent. Some would value them closer to 40 cents on the dollar spent.

  14. You have to use your United Mileageplus credit card on the Sears purchase to get 16x, so I’m not sure where those other figures are coming in. I have the United Club Card, so I guess my payment would be 17.5 miles/$, but I don’t see how you could go above that.

My question is about Sears’ T&C in the email. Only products with “Add to cart are eligible,” ok fine I get that, but then it says, “Not eligible on Sold by Kmart items or any other licensed partners.” So does that mean Marketplace items with an ‘add to cart’ option is eligible?

Seems like everytime I buy something from Sears, and only Sears, it’s a haggle to get the miles/points to post.

  15. Ok, so I guess you CAN use any card and not necessarily a United MP card (Explorer, Select, or Club). I looked everywhere on the portal and couldn’t find any language that says payment by any other non-MP card would not be approved for the bonus payout. (I swear when I first signed up about a year ago it did say something like that)

  16. just curious….what kind of items on sears.com are people convincing themselves they need to buy in order to take advantage of this offer? im having a hard time choosing what to buy. thanks!

  17. I just placed an order for some stuff we need. Prepare yourself for a very boring list: coffee stuff for our Keurig, socks, transformers toys for Christmas, dinosaur box for Christmas, Little Mermaid movie for Christmas, and a couple of other toys to give to nieces/nephews for Christmas. Beware of the marketplace prices as they can be ridiculous. Got free shipping and earned MyWay points on all of it (or whatever they call it). Also did a test e-gift card, though won’t know the results until this is over. Spent about $130 on stuff we would buy anyway (though bought some of it early). Not the thousands other will get, but I’ll take zero risk and about 2,800 miles/points…more if the e-gift card works.

  18. I still have the gift card I bought 2 yrs ago during a similar promo. Just can’t find much stuff to buy. I’d rather go to Marshall’s or similar stores to get discounted brand name clothes and we are not in the market for appliances. Anything I can buy and resell to get rid of the gift card? Or my daughter might get lucky and get an iPod just because I need to get rid of the card 🙂

  19. Does the card you use to make your Sears purchase have to be registered on Mileageplusshopping.com’s profile? Right now I only have my MP Club card in there and wasn’t sure if went ahead and paid with my Freedom card if it would make a difference.

  20. Valerie, you can sell your gift card online for a loss if you want to just liquidate it. Otherwise, folks like to resell things like electronics (computers, cameras, etc). I don’t have the time/risk tolerance for that, so can’t offer too much insight.
Jsyson, no it doesn’t have to be registered.

  21. For suggestions of things to buy: tires, televisions, car batteries, home appliances

Of course, you need to comparison shop, but I’ve found good deals on all of the above in the past.

  22. So, Are you using your Freedom Card for your purchases? If I understand correctly, that is the best card to use? We have the United Explorer and Explorer Business Card but the Freedom would get 5x points on top of the portal points. I’m not finding anything great at sears.com.

  23. Heads up for those w/ a Bank of America credit card: I bought Sears gift cards and paid with a BofA credit card. Minutes later, was pleasantly surprised to receive a notification from the bank that I had earned a cash back bonus on the purchase. Apparently there is a BankAmerideal (similar to Amex sync deals) that I had synced and forgotten about. Deal is $5 cash back on a $50 purchase at Kmart.

  24. So can I buy a Craftsman snowblower with this promo and get the points? When it says not eligible on…Craftsman… does that mean Craftsman products, or does it mean purchasing through craftsman.com? I’m hoping the latter – is there any way I can call and confirm?

    • Pavan, I would buy gift cards through the portal and then use those gift cards to buy the Craftsman products. Physical gift cards have a proven track record of earning points via the portal. E-gift cards may now work again, too, but we don’t know for sure yet.

  25. HI, MP. Great site. Visit everyday and have applied for several credit cards with your links. Question – this was my first time using the United shopping portal. I made two large purchases and am wondering when I should expect to see the points in my account? I’ve already paid for both items and one has been delivered. Thanks!

    • Randy, first, thanks for your support. I would expect a week to 10 days for the miles to show in your shopping account as earned. May take a smudge longer to post in UA. I’ll post when mine show up.

  26. FYI – I bought a physical gift card for a few hundred and one low denomination e-gift card at Sears on October 8th and both are showing now in United Mileage as getting the 12x 🙂

  27. Placed 30 orders for $50 physical GCs on 10/9. Nothing showing up in Plink, Discover CB, or United yet. I’ll give it another week before I start really sweating it…

  28. Just wanted to say thank you very much for pointing this out. I believe I did pretty well with this. I purchased 3-$500 GC using my Chase Freedom (earning 7500 UR and 24,000 United Points). I did need to purchase a grill, so double dipped on that for an additional 4,600 United Points. I then cashed out $1060 worth of GC for $100+$5.95 Visa GC (BB Load). The grill ate up about another $300, so I still have about $140 worth of GC. I’m holding on to that for now, but can always cash out for Amazon GC or Visa GC if I don’t need anything from Sears in the near future. The 4600 points from the double dip showed up about a week ago and the 24K points just shows up today. It seems to then take about another 3-5 days to actually get transferred from the Shopping Portal to my United account.
