If you qualified or re-qualified for SPG Platinum or Gold status in 2013 then you should have received an email congratulating you and informing you of your re-qualification gift options.  You can also check your eligibility hereI wrote about this pretty cool promotion in more here, but essentially if you qualified for Gold after having no SPG status or re-qualified for Gold status then you will have your choice of:

  • double-earning on base points for stays during a future calendar month OR
  • 25% off a future award stay, subject to certain conditions (Up to 5 nights at any Category 1–6 hotel or resort within the next six months)

If you qualified or re-qualified for Platinum status then you will have your choice of:

  • double-earning on base points for stays during a future calendar month OR
  • 35% off a future award stay, subject to certain conditions (Up to 5 nights at any Category 1–6 hotel or resort within the next six months)

Starwood Requalification gift

This is a pretty valuable gift.  For example, say you choose the 35% discount off a points reservation as the Platinum gift, and you plan to use it for 5 nights at a Category 6 hotel such as Moana Surfrider in Hawaii that we visited over the summer.  That hotel is normally 25,000 SPG points per night, but the 5th night is free on a 5 night reservation (as it is for all SPG award reservations), so that means that the 5 nights would normally cost 100,000 points.  With the 35% discount that drops to just 65,000 points for 5 nights at a hotel that normally goes for 25,000 points per night.  That is an effective per night price of 13,000, which is obviously much better than 25,000 points per night!

Some, including my husband, used the strategy of waiting to choose their gift until January 2014 as the six month clock to use the gift starts once you select it (though if you choose double points, the timing is different).  So, claiming your gift now would allow it to be used through July 31, 2014 for the award discount.  However, January 31st is the deadline to claim the gift before it expires, so there is no reason to wait any longer to go ahead and claim it.  I think most people will come out ahead with the % off a points reservation, but if you don’t think you will have a points reservation between now and the end of July, then perhaps double base points for a calendar month will be the best for you.

You will need to contact SPG to utilize the % discount as it cannot be booked on your own online.  It is not valid for Cat 7 properties, upgrade awards, or anything other than a standard room reservation.  We’re still strategizing how we are going to use our gift.  Do you have plans for yours yet?

  1. I was platinum and qualified for Gold with a stay on December 28 of 2013. I never got an email and when I enter my SPG number the site says that I am not eligible for the offer. Should I give it time or call SPG and inquire?

  2. Mark, sorry to hear that. 😉
HelixCardinal, reports in this FT thread would suggest yes.

Lance, if you are Plat you would have to requalify for Plat to get it. Only hitting Gold if you were Plat won’t do it. However, if you were gold and you re-qualified for Gold that would do it.
Hyzer, my understanding is no for that one.

  3. Hi:
I have no status with SPG, but have Amex Plat. If I call up to get Gold status, can I then use the 25% off for a stay in June in Europe where I’m redeeming points for a hotel there?

  4. For the % of award redemption option, how did you figure July 31 would be the end of the promotion? If I did that today, wouldn’t it be July 2? Or does it go through the end of the month?

  5. The email I got did not mention the deadline for selecting the option, specifically the 25% off redemption. What did yours say with regards to that?

  6. Used mine almost immediately last year. Went for the 35% off as you recommend. You might mention that this will be a NEW reservation, so if you’ve already got an existing reservation you’ll have to be able to get a NEW one to claim the discount. If the hotel is full, camp out on their website and re-check. I eventually found space available and was able to claim the discount on the first 5 nights of the new reservation.

  7. Pretty sure the deadline is 1/31, but now I’m not seeing the offer the same way since we claimed ours. Maybe someone else can weigh in on where that deadline was to make sure that I’m not hallucinating.
Jeremy, I don’t think it will work that way unfortunately. First, it was an offer for 2013. Second, don’t think you can get it via having the Amex Platinum.
IPG, it goes through the end of the 6th month, so July 31st.

  8. Thank you SOO MUCH for this tip! I didn’t know about it! Gonna use it for a weekend trip to Beaver Creek at 25% off! :D:D:D:D

  9. I’m unclear — if it’s valid for six months from selection date, how does a 2JAN selection extend to 31JUL? Are they just basing it in the month (and how do we know)?

  10. Agree with BosSaver. My email never mentions anything about a deadline to select which gift, just a deadline of 6 months from when you select the 25% off gift. “Offer is valid for one award at Category 1–6 hotels and resorts for up to a five-night stay six months from when the member registered.”

For the double pts, “earn double Starpoints on all eligible stays during the calendar month that is two months out from today’s month”. Today’s month means the month in which you make your selection. Gold status was achieved through spend on SPG card. I imagine those with the AMEX Platinum should get this gift as well.

  11. By the way, can someone clarify what exactly double pts mean? Is it based on the 2x per dollar spent (so we get 4x pts) or is it double the Gold bonus as well which means 6x pts (Gold gets an extra pt per dollar)?

  12. We are using my husband’s Gold gift right now for a 5-night stay at the Sheraton Port Douglas! Also used his Hyatt cc free nights & my Chase UR points for a 5-night stay at the Park Hyatt Sydney, and our son and I flew to Oz on Delta miles. Points and miles definitely made this family Christmas vacation possible!

  13. Did you know that there is a short cut to Starwood Gold status with just one stay in Asia-Pacific? It comes in handy for everyone who will loose status in March. We outlined it a couple of weeks ago (just search for Starwood Gold on mightytravels dot com)
