Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is this Friday, and for many couples that means spending money on things like dinner, movies, flowers, gifts, etc.  If you fall into the camp that will be celebrating Valentine’s Day in this manner on Friday, then this post is for you because you can earn a nice heart full of miles and points doing these sort of activities.  We will likely spend Valentine’s Day watching a movie in bed with our four year old, but if we’re really lucky, there will be some flowers (likely from a local shop) in a vase and a meal none of us had to cook in our bellies!

Flowers:

United 30 miles per dollar + 150 miles – FTD

American Airlines 30 miles per dollar + 200 miles for Citi AAdvantage cardholders – FTD

Delta 1,500 miles per order – FTD

Or, if you like to buy flowers at a local grocery store then use a card that pays a bonus at the grocery store!

Gifts:

L’Occitane 4x – Ultimate Rewards Portal (need cards like Ink Plus® Business Card, Chase Freedom® or Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card to access)

Godiva Chocolate 5x – Ultimate Rewards Portal

Saks.com 8x – Ultimate Rewards Portal (via Sapphire Preferred log-in)

Shoebuy.com 15x Ultimate Rewards Potal (via Freedom log-in)

Blue Nile 6x – United MileagePlus Shopping

AAdvantage Shopping Bonus:

From January 27th through February 21st, you get some bonus AAdvantage miles depending on how much you cumulatively spend in the portal.  You can read more about this promotion here.

  • $150-$299.99 to earn 500 bonus miles

Dining:

At the very least, be sure to earn 2x on dining out using your Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, but if the restaurant you are heading to happens to participating in the United MileagePlus Dining, then you can earn 1,500 United miles for joining and completing your first dine at a participating restaurant for $30 or more in the first 30 days of membership.  You also have to complete a quick review that will be emailed to you.

Movies:

If you happen to go see a movie for Valentine’s Day (I think I have seen 2 movies since my 4 year old was born!) then remember to use your Chase Freedom® for 5x on movies (and Starbucks and gas) the first quarter of 2014.

Happy Valentine’s Day however you celebrate (or don’t celebrate!)…just make sure to earn miles and points in the process because nothing says “love” like a “free” flight or hotel later on down the line!
