Houston Friends, Get Free Rides With UberX and Lyft

My fellow Houston friends can get free rides from Uber X or Lyft for a limited time as both have just started operating in Houston…for free!  The city ordinances still make it illegal for these type of businesses to operate, but since they aren’t charging for now they can get around that pesky issue. Uber X is encouraging people to tell Mayor Parker and the City Council to update regulations to make sure Uber can be in Houston to stay.  They provide their Twitter handles @anniseparker and @houstontxdotgov so you can tell them #HoustonNeedsUber permanently.

Whether you want to get involved with the politics and regulatory updates or not, you can still snag yourself a free ride. I’ve never used Lyft, but have used Uber in other cities many times with generally good success.  You can request the car on the app you download to your phone and then away you go.

I tried to test it out a bit on my Uber app, but couldn’t get it to do too much since I am not in Houston at the moment.  It did confirm that for a limited time rides are free in Houston.

Feel free to share any referral links you may have to these services in the comments section or head to Deals We Like as she lists her links there.  These type of services really do make travel easier, whether getting around your own city, when heading to the airport, or after a few too many margaritas; they certainly help when you are visiting a new city.

  1. Is there any way for us dinosaurs without smartphones to use Uber?? (I’ll post a photo of my flip phone if anyone is dubious….)

    • UAPhil, good question. Off hand I don’t know of one, but I could be missing something. PS. My dad doesn’t even have a cell phone, so you aren’t that much of a dinosaur. 😉
