I got an email yesterday informing me my US Airways MasterCard was eligible for a targeted offer that results in 4-5x on travel charges. Since I’ve gotten some comments and emails about this targeted offer I figure it is worth mentioning even though it isn’t available to all card holders.  Just as a data point, I have had that card for several years now, but only really use it when it is targeted for some type of bonus.  As a result, it has been a few months since I put any charges on there.

US Airways bonus

The targeted offer awards 3 bonus miles for every $1 spent on travel purchases—up to 5,000 bonus miles— from March 1 through May 31, 2014.  The included categories for travel include:

  • Air travel
  • Cruises
  • Hotels and motels
  • Car rentals
  • Trains

The offer is clear that this is in addition to the miles you already earn for everyday purchases with your card.

This means that for most travel charges I will be earning the bonus 3x plus the regular 1x the card always earns for a total of 4x.  That is better than any other card that I have for those categories until I hit the max of $1,666 for the bonus.  I have a couple of big trips planned during that time frame, so I will have plenty of chances to earn a total of 4x on travel charges.  If you have any US Airways ticket purchases to make you should get a total of 5x on those charges including the bonus 3x + the regular 2x the card earns on US Airways ticket purchases.  That is pretty great compared to what other cards will award for those categories.  Targeted bonuses like this one can’t be controlled, but when they come along they are often a big part of our miles and points earning strategy.

Anyone else plan to take advantage of this same targeted offer?

Terms and Conditions:

This bonus offer is for select US Airways Dividend Miles MasterCard cardmembers and is not transferable. You will earn 3 bonus miles for every one dollar ($1) in new purchase(s) on airlines, hotels/motels, car rentals, trains and cruises (that are not later returned or rescinded) that post to your account between March 1, 2014, and May 31, 2014, up to a maximum of 5,000 bonus miles. Eligible airline purchases, hotel/motel purchases, car rental purchases, train purchases and cruise purchases are defined by merchant category codes. Each merchant designates a category code to assign to purchases at its establishment. Although most airline purchases, hotel/motel purchases, car rental purchases, train purchases and cruise purchases will use merchant category codes selected for this offer, it is possible that some airline, hotel/motel, car rental, train and cruise companies have designated a merchant category code that is not classified as an airline, hotel/motel, car rental, train or cruise company and therefore any purchases made will not qualify for the promotion. To be eligible for this offer, the cardmember’s account must be open and in good standing. Purchases made during periods when the cardmember’s account is delinquent, their balance exceeds their credit line or their account is otherwise not in good standing do not qualify for this offer. The bonus miles will appear on the cardmember’s statement up to 6-8 weeks after the end of the promotion.

My wife and I signed up for this card a few months ago, completed the minimum spend for the signup, then threw the cards in a drawer. About a week ago we both received a different bonus offer: Make $750 in purchases each month for Mar, Apr, May and get 15K bonus miles.

‘Tis the season – Yesterday I received a 3x offer at toy, children’s clothing and department stores from my Citi AA card. They released on the same day last year as well.

Hi! Thanks for the post! I received the offer, too. I don’t have travel within the offer period but I would like to be able to earn the bonus. If I buy gift cards from the airlines and hotels, would they code as travel for the above purpose ( as opposed to 3rd party vendor like points dot com)?

I got this email too. It should work out for at least some spending for my trip later this month.

I’ve been holding out for the 15,000 points/3 month promo. Wife got it last year, but they don’t seem to want to show me the love… :-)

For anyone who doesn’t have travel planned, can you pay towards future travel? I’m considering just paying $1700 towards my December cruise on this so I don’t have to carry the card around on vacation.

  5. I have an offer of 2x points on grocery store purchases (yields a total of 2x points) from January – March. There is a cap of 2,500 extra points. That will be easy to achieve in my household!

My husband and I also received the offer for 15k miles after $750 spend in March, April & May.
