One of my favorite aspects of the American Express Membership Rewards program are periodic transfer bonuses to their hotel and airline partners, and today a new one kicks off! There will be a 30% transfer bonus when transferring from the American Express Membership Reward program to Virgin Atlantic from 5/1 – 5/31.
This means that instead of the regular 1:1 transfer ratio, there will be a transfer ratio that gives you 1,300 Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Miles for every 1,000 Membership Reward points you transfer. Savvy points collectors used to use these transfer bonuses to take advantage of the 1:2 transfer rate from Virgin Atlantic to Hilton HHonors, but that rate changed to 2:3 in February of this year.
You can take a look at the cost of some award flight prices here. The cost in miles isn’t terrible, especially with the transfer bonus, but the fees are pretty bad. The last transfer bonus I remember to Virgin Atlantic was also a 30% bonus back in October of 2013, so in terms of transfer bonuses to Virgin Atlantic this one is about par for the course. I will be sitting on the sidelines for this bonus, but would love to see one return for British Airways!
