Car seats and cabs or other public transportation is a pretty big issue for families with young children. It is almost always a problem and the “solutions” range from pretty bad to unsafe to inconvenient. I’ve done everything from lug a car seat with me and install it in the car service, to just buckling her in a “big girl” seat belt, to just holding on tight with my kid in a cab. I know submit my application at once for the terrible mother of the year award.
If you are renting a car, it is a bit easier as you can “simply” bring your own car seat with you or rent (an often nasty one) from the car rental agency, but if you are using cabs or a service like Uber then there was no easy or perfect solution…until now. I am thrilled that Uber has launched a service in in New York City called UberFAMILY that will allow users to select an UberX car that has a car seat! All the convenience of Uber plus the safety and comfort of a car seat! Like most things in life, this will come with a price of an additional $10 fee on top of the normal UberX price. You need to use the code FAMILY in the promo code section to utilize UberFAMILY.
According to this Time article, there will be “several hundred” of its top-rated UberX drivers driving around the city with IMMI Go car seats in their trunks, and they were trained by Dr. Alisa Baer, better known as “Car Seat Lady,” on the proper way to secure the seats. I have communicated with the “Car Seat Lady” in the past and think this is great! Of course, car seats can actually be kind of tricky to utilize properly, so this is all very interesting to me on the liability front, but exciting none the less. Always double check yourself to make sure you are comfortable with the installation, and as is pointed out in the FAQ’s, you are responsible for securing the child in the harness straps and adjusting the straps accordingly for the size of your kiddo.
Tips for Using Uber Family:
As is pointed out in the Uber blog, this is a new service, and for now you can find the best reliability in their core service area, which includes Manhattan (below 110th Street) and some parts of Brooklyn. The car seat they use is rated for kids who are at least 12 months, 22 lbs, and 31 inches. There is a video they recommend watching prior to using the service so you know how to put your kiddo correctly in this type of car seat.
Save Money on Uber:
While there will be a $10 fee normally, you can use UberFAMILY for free this weekend in honor of Mother’s Day. Care.com, who is sponsoring the free UberFamily weekend, also has a code that gives 20% off with promo code Uber20. You can also get $10 in Uber credit if you are a new customer via my referral link.
I will be in NYC with my daughter in July and I absolutely plan to use UberFAMILY while we are there! I’d love to hear your experience if you get a chance to use it before then. Thanks to Deals We Like for sharing this news!
