The preview list of IHG Point Breaks hotels is now available on the IHG Community Forum. The Point Breaks rooms will be available for 5,000 IHG Reward points per night for bookings (and stays) from July 28- September 30th.  This is just a preview list and the bookings do not go live until Monday of next week.  That is actually a good thing since popular hotels get snapped up relatively quickly and this way you can look the list over in advance to see if any properties might work for your travel plans.

PointBreaks

As is typical, the list is really a crap shoot as to whether any properties will work for your family.  Most of the properties in the United States are Holiday Inn Express or Candlewood Suites properties that aren’t exactly in tourist hotbeds.  However, there could be one that is right along the route of a road trip your family has planned, and for just 5k points you can have a place to rest, swim, sleep, and have a free breakfast before continuing your journey.  There is a smattering of Hotel Indigo and Crowne Plaza properties on the United States list as well.

Outside the US there are a few more ‘upscale’ options such as the Intercontinental Bucharest, Crowne Plaza Istanbul- Harbiye, Intercontinental Costa Rica at Multiplaza Mall. Intercontinental Real Guatemala, Intercontinental Miramar Panama, and more.

Booking Intercontinental properties like some of those for just 5,000 points per night is insane.  If you have travel plans to some of those locations between July 28 – September 30th then certainly be ready on Monday morning (usually between 9-10A Central) to start securing some nights for just 5k points.

If you are running short on IHG Reward points, you can transfer them in 1:1 from the Chase Ultimate Rewards programs and cards such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.  This is not typically a great use of Ultimate Reward points, but it can be worth it for Point Breaks – especially if your account is starting from 0.  If you already have some points in your account you can also “buy” additional points at a cost of $0.007 each – check out this post by Million Mile Secrets for details on that method of obtaining IHG Rewards points.

Update: Better idea – you can currently purchase IHG points via the official channel for as low as .718 cents each via a limited time bonus.  At that price, 5,000 point per night Point Breaks rooms are less than $36/night.

Do any of the properties on the list look like they will work for your family’s travel plans?

Thanks to Mommy Points reader, Greg, for letting me know the new preview list was up!

  1. I actually saw a few potential hotels. One is very close to a place that my husband goes to almost weekly for business, and it is a brand new hotel. 5000 points is awesome.

  2. We stayed in the HI – Cordoba, Argentina 3 1/2 years ago. Fidel Castro, years before, stayed on our floor(the Cubans had the whole floor), with a strong possibility in our suite. Nice hotel, good pool, bad eggs and a wee bit out of city central. Would I stay here again on Points Breaks? You betcha!

  3. Howdy! Do you kow what time the list goes live for booking? There’s finally a location I’m interested in booking. Thanks

    • Karen, seems to vary but I would start checking no later than 9 central. Just keep checking the hotel directly as that booking ability will go live before the actual list.
