Yesterday Marriott announced on Flyertalk that the MegaBonus promotion was going to be open for registration starting today.  Well, technically that was true and there is a Marriott MegaBonus promotion available for registration beginning today August 13 – November 15, 2014, valid for stays  between September 15, 2014 and January 15, 2015.

Marriott MegaBonus

However, this is not the MegaBonus promotion that we know and love where you earn a free night certificate after two stays or similar.  This is a MegaBonus promotion in name only.  As is typical with Marriott there are lots of versions of the promotion out there, and Marriott regulars typically get targeted for some of the better offers.  Officially you can’t change offers, unofficially calling and asking Marriott may work.

The standard offer is earn double points with every paid stay, starting with your second stay, up to 25,000 bonus points

A sampling of the other variations of this promotion that were shared on Flyertalk are:

  • Earn 35,000 bonus points after 20 paid nights, plus an additional 2,000 for every additional paid night, up to 55,000 bonus points
  • Earn 35,000 bonus points after 20 paid nights, plus an additional 15,000 points after 25 paid nights, up to 50,000 bonus points
  • Earn 25,000 bonus points after 12 paid nights, plus an additional 5,000 points after 18 paid nights, up to , up to 30,000 bonus points

None of the offers I have seen shared include a free night certificate.  Extra points are always better than no extra points, but double points starting with a second stay and capped at 25k isn’t mega, it’s pretty minor.   Still worth registering for, but not worth getting excited about.

  1. I’m not sure what you mean by the “Mega-bonus promotion you know and love” of the last 2 Mega Bonuses I registered for one included free night certificates and one was for points. So it hasn’t been consistent enough for me to “know and love” it. The points earnings were similar to the offers posted on Flyertalk so it does seem consistent from that standpoint.
Personally I prefer points so I can combine them to stay at a better quality hotel than what is generally found at a Cat-5.

    • omatravel, there were usually point options available, but the standard offer was typically for free night certificates. Points can certainly be very useful, but I haven’t seen a MegaBonus promo as tame as 2x on second stay and capped at 25k.

  2. The way I see it Marriott has changed their program to be even more revenue based. Nights stayed don’t count as much as dollars spent. Maybe they should make their elite qualification revenue based as well.

The Megabonus used to be very family friendly, not so much anymore. Although the Certs could only be used at Cat 1-5 or Cat 1-4 properties, most of the Residence Inn and other similar properties were included in these categories. Great for the out of town soccer tournament etc, especially since a decent breakfast is included.

  3. My offer was even different from those you have cited on flyer talk:

Earn 25,000 bonus points after 15 paid nights, plus an additional 15,000 points after 20 paid nights up to 40,000 bonus points.

There is no way I’ll be able to make this one which kinda sucks, unless some really unexpected business travel comes up.

    • Chrissy, worth a call to Marriott to try to get switched to a more attainable offer then I think. Worth a shot!

  4. This seems better than the current promotion, which is double points on the 3rd stay (which could have netted a certificate in the earlier promotions!).

  5. Hi MP,

Fairly new to the points game here and I have a question. Is the Mega-Bonus only good for new reservations? I already have a reservation for 5 nights for early December 2014. If I sign up for the MegaBonus, will it include those stays? Or, would I have to cancel the existing reservation and re-reserve? I am loathe to do that because I got a really great rate a while back and I’m afraid I won’t get that rate again. Thanks!

    • chirp chirp, you should not have to rebook your stays, assuming they were booked with Marriott and not via a third party booking site.

  6. I think the real contests may officially be over. Remember the good old days of BOGO or 2 for 1 or huge points for 1 or 2 stays? Now “mega” means double after second paid stay? The last good hotel promo was club Carlson 50,000 after one stay and 38,000 after one stay at country inn & suites. I don’t understand these promos now. They don’t encourage people to book additional stays at their hotels. They just seem to be giving extra points to people who would have stayed at their hotels anyway.

Earlier today I found myself reminiscing about US Airways Grand slam. My how times have changed.
