Even if you aren’t much of an online shopper, odds are you will be buying something online during the last quarter of the year.  Holiday presents, Halloween costumes, and more aren’t all made at the North Pole, so shopping online can be an easy way to help supplement what the elves make.

Since this is something you will probably do anyway, here is a 5 second tip to earn 5x points on the Chase Freedom®!

1,  Activate the fourth quarter bonus categories of,, and select department stores.

2.  Log into your account and update credit cards to include the  Chase Freedom, and set the Freedom as the default via one-click ordering and similar.  To do this just click on “Your Account” and then “Manage Payment Options”.

Freedom bonus

Now you will easily earn 5x points on your Amazon purchases for the rest of the year, up to the $1,500 quarterly 5x max!

The 5x Freedom bonus this quarter is also good at and select department stores.  For planning purposes, the select department stores included are:

Sears, JCPenney, Macy’s Kohl’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Off Fifth, Sam Moon, Dillard’s, Bealls, and more.  You can view a full list here.  The 5x points the Freedom earns will be on top of some of the massive shopping portal payouts we have seen for many department stores!

Some stores such as Target, Walmart, Membership Warehouses, and electronics stores are specifically listed as not eligible for 5x since they are not classified as department stores.  .

Maximizing the Points Your Freedom Earns:

The points earned via the Freedom are worth one cent each toward cash back or gift cards unless you also have a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Ink Plus® Business Card in which case you can transfer the points earned on the Freedom to hotel and airline partners such as United, Hyatt, Southwest, British Airways, Marriott, Singapore Airlines, and more.

I highly recommend activating the 4th quarter bonus now and setting as your payment method on Amazon so you can’t get busy later on and accidentally miss out on some very easy 5x earnings!

  1. I’m pretty sure Amazon payments doesn’t count for 5X. But what about buying Amazon gift cards directly from the Amazon website? If I don’t make my $1500 quota otherwise, can I finish it off with AGCs at the end of Dec?

  2. Great point about setting the Freedom card as default on Amazon! Using that card is something I would surely forget during the buying process.

  3. @CCORD Thanks, that’s what I wanted to know. Buying GCs now, earning 5X, and using them later sounds good to me. I don’t spend enough on gas to max out the other quarters, so this is quarter the best I am going to do with this card.

We just used most of our Chase points for Suites Class to Singapore. 🙂 We need to refill our points stash. So I want to make sure we hit the limit this quarter.
