There are always miles and points deadlines that come at the end of the month, and at the end of the quarter.  I’m going to focus on two things that are really relevant to many of us in order to not miss out on miles and points.

Register to Get 20% of Your Hyatt Points Back Today:

If you have the Hyatt Visa you will get 20% of your redeemed Hyatt points back from 2/17 – 7/31/15, but only if you register by March 31st.

You can read all about this promotion here.  If you have trouble registering via the online link then I recommend calling Hyatt or contacting them on Twitter @Hyatt_Concierge to help get you manually registered.

Maximize the Chase Freedom First Quarter 5x Bonus:

The Chase Freedom® offers 5x points on rotating bonus categories each quarter, and for the first quarter of 2015 the 5x bonus categories were grocery stores, movie theaters, and Starbucks.  You earn 5x points up to a $1,500 maximum each quarter, so the key to getting the most value out of this card is to spend up to the maximum each quarter (without spending money you otherwise wouldn’t have spent).

With grocery stores on the list, that should be an easy 7,500 points for just $1,500 in spending for most of us as long as you keep track of your 5x spending!  Since the deadline is 3/31, it is time to see if you need to squeeze in one more trip to the grocery store before the calender turns to April.

Chase BluePrintIf you aren’t sure how much you have spent in those bonus categories this quarter this post and this post should help you come up with a total you have spent in the bonus categories pretty quickly.  I just stopped by a local grocery store to pick up a $500 gift card to get me to the $1,500 quarterly max so I didn’t miss out on some pretty easy points that can become transferable Ultimate Reward points if you also have a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

No matter if you are able to max out the $1,500 maximum for this quarter or not, I recommend going ahead and activating the second quarter 5x bonus categories of restaurants, Bed, Bath and Beyond, H&M, and Overstock.com that kick in on April 1st.

I hope March has brought spring weather to your area in addition to a nice pile of miles and points!

  1. Do you know what time the cutoff is for the Freedom quarter, is it Midnight EDT or your local time? Or does it need to post to count?

  2. Hi MP. When I use the BluePrint, Walmart is listed as one of my grocery vendors. Does that mean I received 5 pts. for those transactions as well?

      • Just an FYI. I did some calculating. Unless they take the points away, I did receive points for walmart. It is a supercenter, so maybe thats the difference. I received this card in December and got 20,000 points (I think). I multiplied all the items on the BluePrint that were grocery items by 5 for Jan – Mar. then added 1 point for all other items. The totals matched my rewards summary (points earned). Can someone try this that has used their card at walmart. I would like to buy some gift cards today to finish off my $1500.00.

        • I would but haven’t been to Walmart, just know they are called out as ineligible in the FAQ, but maybe the terms written and the way things work in practice are different. 😉
