Happy Friday – the new IHG Rewards PointBreaks preview list is out and I actually think this list has real potential for some summer family trips even if it is light on “high end” properties.  As you may already know, IHG PointsBreaks are hotels that are available for just 5,000 IHG points per night instead of the regular points prices that can go as high as 50,000 points per night.

The next round of PointBreaks will actually go live on Tuesday May 26th for bookings and stays from May 26 – July 31, 2015.  To help you plan, the preview list is now up on the IHG Blog and shared below.  If you are doing some exploration of the United States this summer it is totally possible some of these properties might be useful as you go through a certain area such as:

Holiday Inn Carlsbad

Candlewood Suites Fort Collins

Candlewood Suites Augusta

Holiday Inn Mount Prospect – Chicago

Holiday Inn Express Austin North Central

Candlewood Suites Roswell New Mexico

Candlewood Suites Galveston

These aren’t all super fancy joints, but they are located in and around some areas that many families like to visit, so at just 5,000 points per night during the expensive travel months they might be worth a look.

Holiday Inn Carlsbad in San Diego

Holiday Inn Carlsbad near San Diego

As you get ready for the list to go live for booking on Tuesday, remember that if you already have some points in your account, you can also “buy” additional points at a cost of $0.007 each (for a total of about $35 per Point Breaks night) – check out this post by Million Mile Secrets for details on that method of obtaining IHG Rewards points.  You also can transfer the points in 1:1 from cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, though that generally isn’t the most lucrative way to use Ultimate Reward points.

The IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card is also a great way to build up points for future PointBreak lists.

There is no exact time that the list goes live for booking, but it is usually in the morning somewhere between 8AM – 10AM Central.  Typically the properties are available for booking before the list is actually live, so I will be sure to update as soon as I notice the properties available for just 5,000 points each!  This Flyertalk forum also keeps a close eye on the list, so they are a great resource as well.

  1. I’ve created a map as well as a sortable table of the 145 IHG Point Breaks hotels – I find that easier than just a list of links. If anyone finds it useful, it’s at

    http://www.pointswithacrew.com/map-of-all-ihg-pointbreaks-may-2015-june-2015-and-july-2015/

I have family in Houston so I was thinking of coming down your way MP – since they have a Staybridge Suites on the Point Breaks list…. but then I remembered who wants to visit Houston in June or July!?!?!? 😀

    • Dan, thanks for that. I noticed that the IHG Blog actually mapped them out this time as well – very helpful additions.

  2. I’ll pass on that Carlsbad pictured. Not the one on the beach but far inland, far from San Diego and bad reviews.

Austin looks good and Portland looks fine. The Frankfurt one is exceptionally good too.

Crown Plaza Panama and The Intercontinental Vietnam are probably tops.

  3. It seems the actual list of PointBreak hotels are quite different than the ‘leaked memo’ version.
two hotels that I was eyeing were left off the official list.
