The no-annual-fee Chase Freedom credit card offers 5x points earning in quarterly rotating bonus categories (up to $1,500 cap per quarter), but you have to remember to activate the 5x bonus categories each quarter or you don’t earn the bonus points.  The deadline to activate the second quarter 5x bonuses of restaurants, Overstock.com, and Bed, Bath, and Beyond is tomorrow – Sunday June 14th, so if you have not already activated the bonus, be sure to do it now before it is too late.  As long as you activate the bonus by tomorrow it is retroactive back to the beginning of the quarter on April 1st.

Chase Freedom®: Temporarily Increased – 20,000 points (aka $200 in cash) after spending $500 in the first three months + 2,500 points for adding an authorized user who makes a purchase in the first three months.

Another deadline coming up with the Chase Freedom is less than two weeks away (on June 24th), when the temporarily increased sign-up bonus of 20,000 points after you spend $500 in the first three months likely drops back to 10,000 points after you spend $500 in the first three months.  Remember that on top of those amounts, you can get another 2,500 points for adding an authorized user when they make a purchase in the first three months.

You see this card marketed as $200 dollars, but that also equates to 20,000 Ultimate Reward points you can transfer 1:1 to hotel and airline partners such as United, Hyatt, British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Marriott, IHG Rewards, Southwest and more if you or your spouse also have the Ink Bold Business Charge Card, Ink Plus Business Credit Card, or Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

If you already have the card yourself, some people have had the increased offer available via the Chase Refer-A Friend website which enable yous to get 5,000 bonus points for each referred and approved friend or family member.

Looking ahead, know that beginning on July 1st the 5x bonus categories will be “gas stations” and more.  I imagine we will discover the “and more” part of the equation in the next few days as activation opens for the third quarter.

Track Your 5x Spending:

While we are on the topic, this is a good time to check your progress toward the $1,500 5x quarterly max for this quarter.  To do so there are a few options, but I like to use the BluePrint feature in my online Chase account to have a good idea of spending in the bonus categories.  Here I can quickly track how much I have spent in restaurants in recent months on my Chase Freedom.

Track Chase Freedom 5xI would add to that spending at Overstock.com and Bed, Bath, and Beyond to see how much more I could spend before I hit the $1,500 5x quarterly max.  In my case I may be visiting the gift card section at Bed, Bath, and Beyond in the near future since my restaurant spending isn’t going to likely hit $1,500 these three months.  More on that gift card rack in a future post…

  1. I got a referral offer of 5k points if I get someone to sign up for Freedom (but they only get the 20k, not the extra 2500 for an AU). I was planning to refer to my wife, but now all the talk of the Chase churning crackdown has scared me off. Do you think it’s worth a shot anyways?

    • My fiancee signed up for the Freedom from my referral was approved. I was surprised because she already had a ton (10+) hard pulls on her EX report from other cards she opened jointly with her mother over the past two years to help her mom out. Her TU and EQ both only had two inquiries though, so maybe Chase pulled from those instead? I’m pretty sure they only do EX though. At any rate: instant approval, but YMMV.

  2. I’ll be making a BBB gift card run myself before the end of the month. Any whispers yet of what the next quarter’s bonuses, beyond gas stations?

  3. Thank you for the great post! I am in the market for a new card. Would you suggest the Chase Freedom or Chase Sapphire Preferred? My current travel goal is earning United miles for a trip to Honolulu (from Houston) for my family of four.

    • Clarissa, if you are only going to have one and the goal is transfer to United then I would start with the Sapphire Preferred since it enables transfers to United. I would then add the Freedom as it is great for the 5x. However, if you aren’t in a rush to make the transfer you could start with the Freedom. A last option that might work well is for you and your spouse to each get a different card. One of you gets the Sapphire Preferred and one gets the Freedom. That way you can have the best of both worlds right from the start.
