Free Award Nights Start at 2,000 Points Per Night

There are many reasons that SPG points are valued so highly in my household, but one reason I want to look at today is that you can redeem as few as 2,000 points for a totally free hotel award night.  Many other programs require 5,000 – 10,000+ points for an entry level award night, but with SPG a Category 1 property on the weekend is just 2,000 points.  That means that the 5,000 point increase in the sign-up bonus can get you two additional award nights if you were to redeem them in that manner – and have 1,000 points left over!

The SPG award chart goes from Category 1 – 7 properties with Category 1 properties starting at 2,000 points per night on the weekends, and Category 7 properties going all the way up to 35,000 points per night.  Clearly that means that there is a very wide range of how far your SPG points can take you.  While there are some fantastic SPG properties at the upper end of the spectrum, today I want to look at some Category 1 and 2 properties for those who like to stretch their points as far as they can go.

Category 1 and Category 2 SPG Properties

There are currently 67 SPG category 1 properties and they go for 3,000 points per night on weekdays and 2,000 points per night on weekends.

There are currently 197 SPG category 2 properties and they go for 4,000 points per night on weekdays and 3,000 points per night on weekends.

You can also decide to use cash and points to book Category 1 and 2 properties for 1,500 points + $30 or 2,000 points + $35 per night, respectively.  You can see the full cash and points award chart below, but for families it is worth highlighting that suites start at just 3,000 points + $75 per night for Category 1 properties.  This can be a great way to get more space for a relatively low price!

There are currently only four Category 1 SPG properties in the Untied States, all of which are airport properties.  However, there are some more unique looking Category 1 properties around the world in places like Africa, China, Italy, Punta Cana, India, Malaysia, Turkey, and more.

For example, here is the Category 1 ITC Rajpuntana, a Luxury Collection property in India.

If Europe is more your style, here is the waterfront Sheraton Catania Hotel & Conference Center in Italy.

If you look at the list of Category 2 properties you will find many more options both in the United States and beyond.  One of the Category 2 properties we got huge value out of last year was the Four Points Kansas City Sports Complex that is walking distance to the stadiums for the KC Chiefs and the KC Royals.  We used points there during the World Series last year and got a room selling for hundreds of dollars per night for just 4,000 points!

If you want to use points to stay in Las Vegas, you can spend just 3,000 points per weekend night at the The Four Points by Sheraton Las Vegas East Flamingo that is just a couple blocks off the Las Vegas strip.  That could be a really budget friendly option on nights when prices in Las Vegas are higher than normal due to big events.  For example, you can book for New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas at that property for both 2015 and 2016 for just 3,000 points per night!

If family friendly fun is more your goal, you can spend 3,000 – 4,000 points per night at the Sheraton Lake Buena Vista Resort located just a mile from Walt Disney World in Orlando.

Outside of the United States you will find SPG Category 2 properties in places like Cancun, Vancouver, Montreal, Barcelona, Canary Islands, Abu Dhabi, and much more.

Sheraton Fuerteventura Beach, Golf & Spa Resort Canary Isle - Kids Pool and Ocean

Do you have any favorite SPG Category 1 or 2 properties that your family has visited or hopes to visit in the future?!

  1. I’m trying to use my Starwood points (from sign up bonus) to book a couple of nights at the St. Regis in Dana Point, Ca. There’s basically no availability for all of July of next year! I would’ve thought I’d be able to find availability this far out but no such luck. I really want to do a Points + Cash redemption but that’s not available either. We have 60,000 points (me and hubby combined).

In your experience do hotels tend to blackout availability during peak times then open it up later? Or, do they just stayed blacked out? I’m speaking about Starwood properties in particular.

    Thanks for any insight.

    • Looks like most of July is available next year for award nights except July 18 – 23rd. There are only a few dates in early July that currently have cash and points availability. Hope you can find some dates that work for you. If there is a standard room for sale it should be available for points. My best guess is that there is probably some event going on there July 18 – 23rd. Totally possible rooms open up at some point.

      • Thanks for your reply. I meant to say I was trying to get cash and points nights at St Regis and there was no availability outside of a couple of nights the first weekend in July. I’m trying to go mid to late July.

By the way, we’re going to Maui then Laguna Beach. You’ve mentioned your love for Hawaii (is that right?). I’m excited. My kids will have a blast. And me too!

        • Gabby, oh okay. Yeah cash and points availability is usually more limited as hotels can make it available or not available at their own discretion. No real way to tell if they will open more up later. You could contact them and ask them nicely if they would open some availability for you. May not work, but you could try.

Enjoy Hawaii – we love it!
