As I’m sure other moms have also experienced, its been a while since I really bought clothes for myself since I was either hoping to be pregnant soon or actually pregnant for well over a year.  And maternity clothes decidedly do not count as real clothing purchases!  As I am transitioning back into “normal people clothes” I’m finding some gaps in my closet, and have started to dream of getting a couple new items at some point soon-ish.

It seems like the American Airlines eShopping portal is reading my mind/dreams and they are currently offering 15x miles on purchases at Neiman Marcus Last Call.  This is the discount arm of Neiman Marcus, so while the clothes are still made by some of the same designers or name brands, the prices aren’t nearly as high as you may have seen at Neiman Marcus.  That said, there are still things you may not need for trips to the grocery store like $7,000 designer dresses marked down to $2,000, but there are much functional items, too.  I don’t recommend buying items you don’t actually need just for miles, but I am a big fan of timing purchases with increased mileage payouts when possible.  So, if you are like me and need a few more solid pieces of “real people clothing” this might be a good day to browse online.

A quick look at some other portals showed that the United MileagePlus Shopping portal is paying out 10x miles at various shoe sites including: ShoeMall, New Balance, and Finish Line.  That portal does sometimes require you to have a co-branded United card like the United MileagePlus® Explorer Card to get the highest payout amounts, so if you don’t see 10x at those retailers, that may be the cause.

Now to find time to browse for clothes….

  1. The UA shopping portal promo (back to school) was perfect for me. I ordered all of the kids school clothes/shoes along with some new work clothes/shoes for myself online through the portal. I ended up spending about $1500 and getting a little over 12,000 miles because of all of the 10X’s, 8X’s, etc. bonuses. I timed my purchases to coincide with the higher bonus offers.

I normally don’t spend that much on clothes/shoes but I was instructed that I needed new clothes and shoes for work (by my husband and mom) because like you and other moms I very rarely shop for myself.

Perfect timing with the bonuses so I went for it.

I now check the portal before making any orders online. I compare the UA portal with the Chase UR portal to see which one is offering the higher bonus. Ex: Right now Apple is only 1X on UA but 2X on Chase UR. I need some new chargers for my phone/iPad so I’ll go through Chase UR to order.
