As I mentioned on Friday, the online airline shopping portals have started rolling out their holiday shopping bonuses, and if you do any online shopping at all you need to stop and take notice.  It is absolutely possible to turn your holiday shopping (or just ordinary purchases you happen to be making during the holidays) into a net earning of thousands, if not tens of thousands of airline miles without spending any extra money and barely any extra time.

United Shopping Bonus

The United MileagePlus bonus of up to 6,000 miles is now up and live for all accounts, and the American Airlines AAdvantage bonus of up to 5,000 bonus miles is now in its “bonus two day” preview stage for select accounts.  It should go live for all accounts on Tuesday.

AAdvantage bonus

Here are details on the American Airlines AAdvantage bonus that is live now for some accounts and will be going live publicly in two days.

Based on your cumulative shopping today or Tuesday (depending on if you were included in the two bonus days) through November 26th in the AAdvantage Shopping Portal you can earn the following bonuses:

  • Spend $150, earn 450 bonus miles
  • Spend $550, earn 2,000 bonus miles
  • Spend $1,200, earn 5,000 bonus miles

As always these bonus miles will be on top of whatever the retailer is paying out and the miles are awarded by paying with the credit card you select.

As an example, right now some retailers like Backcountry.com, Under Armour, and OldNavy.com are paying out at 8x AAdvantage miles each.  If you had a cumulative total of $1,200 in purchases at retailers paying out at 8x miles during the bonus time period then you would earn 8 miles x $1,200 spent + 5,000 bonus miles + whatever miles you earned on your rewards credit card for a likely total of at least 15,800 AAdvantage miles for “just” $1,200 in purchases.  I know not everyone will have that much to spend online this month, but I’ll post soon about how you may have more qualifying purchases to make than you realize.

Terms and Conditions:

During the “Holiday Early Access” bonus campaign, which runs from 11/8/15 through 11/26/15 at 11:59:59 pm ET (the “Bonus Period”), Member will earn a one-time bonus of up to 5,000 AAdvantage® bonus miles on qualifying purchases, in addition to the standard AAdvantage miles earned from shopping online through AAdvantage eShoppingSM mall. Bonus miles will be issued based on Member’s cumulative qualifying purchases made during the Bonus Period: 450 bonus miles for qualifying purchases of at least $150; 2,000 bonus miles for qualifying purchases of at least $550; or 5,000 bonus miles for qualifying purchases of $1,200 or more. Returns, cancellations, shipping and handling, taxes, gift card or other cash equivalent purchases, and certain products are not included in the bonus miles eligibility calculation; please see the AAdvantage eShopping mall site for details on product eligibility and/or any coupon code details or other usage restrictions. Please allow 8-10 weeks after the Bonus Period for bonus miles to post to your AAdvantage eShopping mall account. The maximum number of bonus miles that will be awarded to an eligible AAdvantage eShopping mall account through the Holiday Early Access bonus campaign is 5,000 bonus miles. This offer cannot be combined with other offers or promotions. Please check the AAdvantage eShopping mall site daily for updates to increased earning opportunities. Void where prohibited by law.

  1. Great information. Today I just spent $1,300 at a merchant that I would have paid anyway for a planned purchase for next month. Earned 10,200 AA miles with the bonus.

  2. While you present some examples of potential regarding merchants who already offer significant miles earning, these bonuses may actually be most useful for merchants that are typically stingy with bonuses. $1200 spent through eBay, at one point per dollar, ordinarily scores 1200 points. With the promotional miles, it gets 6200 miles – over 500% as much. Much the same for other stingy merchants like WalMart and Home Depot (whose margins I rather suspect cannot absorb more generous miles payouts).

    • Indeed – helps both with payouts that are already great and for those that are almost always around 1 mile per dollar anyway. 😉

      • I’ll even add that eBay can be a particularly good merchant to the extent that they sell gift cards for MANY merchants – so long as one is purchasing gift cards for merchants they otherwise shop and that the time value of money is something one can stomach, concentrating procurement of such gift cards during such a promotion is quite advantageous.

As for me, I will certainly buy $1200 in gift cards in one transaction, getting the minimum spend for the 5000 miles out of the way immediately, without needing to spend time monitoring my spend level.

  3. I just read too that gift card purchases do not qualify for shopping portal points or bonus points. Another blogger was describing earning 6200 AAdvantage miles for purchasing $1200 of gift cards from Staples via the AA shopping portal.
