There’s no denying the crazy low prices sometimes found on low cost carrier Spirit Airlines (here are my 10 favorite things about Spirit!). There is also no denying the reality that everything on Spirit Airlines costs extra, and if you need to check bags the costs for “extras” can add up quickly.
However, if you are active duty military then the overall cost of flying Spirit has recently gotten cheaper as they have introduced new policy that allows for all passengers with an active military ID to receive two free checked bags and one free carry-on bag. For any active duty military member who has already purchased bags for an upcoming trip, Spirit will offer refunds at its ticket counters.
This new policy can easily save an eligible member of the military over $100 per trip as carry-on bag prices start at $35 and checked bag prices start at $30 and go up from there (prices slightly lower for $9 Fare Club members).
Spirit Airlines’ President and Chief Executive Officer has said that this is the first of many steps Spirit is taking to improve the overall customer experience, so I’ll certainly be watching to see what they may introduce next. Thumbs up for this nice perk for members of our military!
The rest of us will just keep packing in our backpack/personal item to avoid the bag fees…
