One of the more interesting flights that currently operates out of Houston is the Singapore Airlines flight that goes from Houston to Moscow to Singapore. I’m sure that the Houston – Moscow segment is very useful or even fun for some travelers, but it is being replaced with something a little more interesting to me personally…a Singapore flight from Houston to Manchester, England!
For those not super familiar with UK geography, Manchester is located roughly halfway between London and Edinburgh. I’d like to visit Russia at some point, but I will probably visit the UK far more frequently, so this seems like a really fun addition to the route map beginning October 30th!
The Houston – Manchester route will operate five times per week as part of the larger Houston – Manchester – Singapore service. According to the Business Traveller, “Flight SQ52 will depart Singapore at 02:35 and arrive in Manchester at 09:00. Following a brief stopover, the service will depart Manchester again at 10:15 before arriving in Houston at 14:35. The return service will see SQ51 depart Houston at 19:15 and arrive in Manchester at 10:05 the next day. The flight will then take off from 11:35 and touch back down in Singapore at 08:20 the following day.’
Singapore Airlines has excellent business and first class seats, even if they are the older seats on the 777 that will reportedly serve this route. Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer miles can be transferred 1:1 from Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards, and Amex Membership Rewards via cards and even the annual-fee-free Amex EveryDaySM Credit Card, so Singapore Airlines award tickets can be attainable even if you don’t currently have any KrisFlyer miles.
Not only that, but the prices for award tickets really aren’t terrible when booking through the KrisFlyer program. There are some surcharges when redeeming miles via this program often of a few hundred dollars, but considering the relatively low mileage component it may still be a good deal. What may be more painful are the UK Air Passenger Duty fees that are higher for premium cabins when departing the UK. Factoring in the 15% mileage discount for booking online, the new Houston – Manchester route should cost 57,375 KrisFlyer miles in first class, 48,875 KrisFlyer miles in business class, and 17,000 miles in economy each way at the saver level + taxes and fees.
I’ve had one Singapore Airlines flight from Male, and I very much hope to take this particular flight in the future!
