A big nationwide airfare sale kicked off today thanks to the Southwest Airline $49+ sale! Southwest has done some version of this sale a couple of times a year for the past several years and it really does represent a very good time to lock in airfare on the discounted routes…or to reprice Southwest awards or purchased flights with no penalty and put some points back in your Rapid Rewards account if the price dropped!
Typically many of the other major US carriers will match the Southwest sale prices on at least some of the discounted routes at some point, so keep checking prices if you prefer an airline other than Southwest!

Real Life Sale Example:
As usual, the easiest way to spot the cheapest dates to fly is to use Southwest’s Flexible Date Calendar. Below is an example of Austin – Denver during the February ski season. Prices start at just 3,876 points each way for the cheapest flights DURING SKI SEASON! Even the most expensive days to fly have flights that start from 5,000 – 9,000 points each way (other than the last Sunday of the month). That is pretty incredible when you think that the “standard saver award” with many programs starts at 12,500 miles each way. When you can fly a family for just a few thousand miles each way you can really stretch your points and sign-up bonuses like the 100,000 point Chase Sapphire Reserve offer to the max. Remember that Chase Ultimate Reward points can transfer 1:1 to Southwest.
This sale runs through Thursday, but sometimes the most popular routes/dates/times do sell out at the lowest prices, so don’t delay in re-pricing your Southwest awards or locking in the flights you want. Also keep an eye out for matches from the other carriers!
Did you pull the trigger on any discounted routes?
