Great news for budget travelers who fly Spirit Airlines – they seem to finally be joining the current decade and state on Twitter that they will have PreCheck up and working by the end of January….which is less than a week away! In fact, it may already be up via a soft launch this week.

My parents are from the generation of travelers that get to the airport several hours early…and that’s a darn good thing because as pretty regular Spirit travelers they have hit security lines of over an hour even within the last few months when trying to get into the terminal! However, with Spirit finally joining the world of PreCheck, those insane lines just to fly Spirit will hopefully be a thing of the past for those who have PreCheck.

If you have any upcoming Spirit flights you may want to go in and add your Known Traveler Number so you can hopefully get PreCheck on your Spirit flights and avoid wasting time in a long security line!

If you have yet to get PreCheck, remember that lots of premium rewards credit cards offer a statement credit to reimburse the application fee for Global Entry ($100 that will also get you PreCheck) or for just the PreCheck program ($85).

PreCheck

I’ll update when Spirit officially gives the word that PreCheck is up and running!

  1. I was just approved today for global entry/TSA Precheck. If traveling with little kids, do they also have to have TSA Precheck privileges for the entire family to go through precheck line?

  2. This would have been nice over the holidays when we flew with Spirit to the Dominican Republic. We decided to travel very last minute and this was the most reasonable flight we could find (it was part of a vacation package). The lines were not crazy long, but there was NO line for PreCheck. Oh well…maybe next time.

  3. This is great news — at least for me! Next month, I have my first Spirit flight in years, and precheck will certainly make me feel less grumpy about flying them. BTW, I recently flew Frontier, and their new precheck program worked without a hitch.

I don’t really recommend flying this ultra low cost carriers, but sometimes the fare differential is so great that it makes sense to use them (at least if you’re able to travel with a bag that meets their small free carry-on limitations). The availability of precheck definitely makes me more willing to do.
