Via a new partnership, you can leverage your IHG membership and/or elite status to save on gas at participating Shell stations via the Fuel Rewards program. With this program, all IHG members can save 5¢ per gallon, Platinums can save 6¢ per gallon, and Spire elites can save 7¢ per gallon.

Saving 5¢ – 7¢ on each gallon of gas isn’t huge, but it certainly doesn’t hurt if a Shell station is a good option for you on your travels. You can earn additional per gallon discounts by going into your Fuel Rewards account and utilizing additional offers based on purchases.

Personally, I already utilize the Fuel Rewards program via my local Kroger’s grocery store and deals like this one, so I don’t think I am overly likely to make huge use of this particular version of the program. However, I can see how it could eventually save me a few dollars when I am at non-Kroger shell stations on my travels or when I don’t otherwise have fuel savings to utilize.

Do you plan to make use of the IHG Fuel Rewards partnership?

Terms and Conditions:

Offer valid in the United States only, from 3/3/2017- 3/2/2018. To qualify for this offer you must 1) be an IHG® Rewards Club member, 2) be a member of the Fuel Rewards® program and 3) link your IHG® Rewards Club number to your Fuel Rewards® account.

Once you have signed up for the Fuel Rewards® program and linked your IHG Rewards Club account to your Fuel Rewards® account, you will receive a one-time Fuel Rewards® savings of 5¢ per gallon of gasoline (“Linking Reward”) at a participating Shell or other select participating fuel stations (Fuel Rewards® savings in the amount of 5¢/gal will post to your Fuel Rewards® account). The Linking Reward is available for immediate redemption once posted to your Fuel Rewards® account and will expire on the last day of the month immediately following the month in which the Linking Reward is posted to your Fuel Rewards® account. In addition, after we have verified your IHG Rewards Club membership tier, which should occur within 7-10 days from when your accounts are linked, everyday Fuel Rewards® savings (“Everyday Rewards”) will be applied at the pump when you use your Fuel Rewards® card or Alt ID at participating Shell or other participating fuel stations, based on your IHG® Rewards Club membership tier: Club and Gold Elite Members will save at least 5¢/gal (if you are already a Fuel Rewards member with a balance of 0-4¢/gal, your savings will be 5¢/gal); Platinum Elite Members will save at least 6¢/gal (if you are already a Fuel Rewards member with a balance of 0-5¢/gal, your savings will be 6¢/gal); Spire Elite Members will save at least 7¢/gal (if you are already a Fuel Rewards member with a balance of 0-6¢/gal, your savings will be 7¢/gal). If you are already a Fuel Rewards member and your Fuel Rewards® savings balance is greater than your Everyday Rewards, you will redeem your current Fuel Rewards® savings balance. Changes in your IHG® Rewards Club membership tier will be reflected in your Everyday Rewards within 7-10 days after the change in membership tier. Fuel Rewards® savings are limited to 20 gallons of fuel per purchase per vehicle or fraud limits placed by Shell and/or limits placed on your payment card by your financial institution, each of which may be lower. Dispenser may require a price of up to $0.109/gallon. It may not be possible to combine multiple discounts and/or rewards in a single transaction. Once you begin to dispense fuel using your Fuel Rewards® savings, you must dispense to the 20-gallon limit or you forfeit any remaining savings for the other gallons. If you have a Fuel Rewards® savings balance greater than the current per-gallon price of fuel, the price will roll down to the maximum capability of the fuel equipment, and your remaining Fuel Rewards® savings balance will be saved for a future fuel purchase. For purchases of $75 or more, please go inside to pay. Unbranded diesel and alternative fuels may not be eligible. The Fuel Rewards® program is owned and operated by Excentus Corporation. 1. Used it yesterday for a rental car I needed to return. Shell was the best option, so I signed up, and 5 minutes later saved 5 cents/gallon at the pump, while still being able to use my Chase Freedom for 5% back. Win-win for us. It would not have been worth driving across town to buy 1/2 tank of gas at Costco, and the 5 cents made it cheaper than the much less convenient off-brand station nearby.

  2. OK. This isn’t clear to me. Is there another card involved in this that somehow ties your fuel purchase to your IHG number? Or do you register your credit card(s)? Or ?

    • My understanding is it can work a few ways. Either you can enter your alternate ID at the pump (your phone number), or you can link a credit card, or you can use your Fuel Rewards card if you request one.

    • You register for a Fuel Rewards account. Until you get a card you should be able to get an “Alternate ID” ie. phone number and PIN. Within this Fuel Rewards account you link your IHG number.

If you’re a T-Mobile customer the TMo Tuesdays have had 25 cents/gallon promos. Also a Shell gift card should trigger a 5 cents/gallon discount and the cash price and you can still use any Fuel Rewards discounts.

Unfortunately the Shell station with reasonable pricing stopped allowing you to purchase gift cards in their store with credit cards for obvious reasons.

  3. Shell is rarely the best option at home, but this comes just in time for a drive down to MIA for a cruise during spring break. IIRC, all the gas stations on the Florida tollway are Shell, and we wind up filling up at least once along the way.
