I’ve come to rely on the June Southwest nationwide sale to book domestic fall travel (other than the holiday dates) at a real discount over normal prices, at least on the routes that Southwest puts on sale. There’s obviously no guarantee that this sale will return year after year, but it arrived right on schedule again yesterday and will run through Thursday for travel on certain days from 8/22/17 – 12/13/17. This sale really is great not only for those who like to fly Southwest, but also for those who fly other airlines that match the Southwest sale prices!
There is no guarantee as to which airlines will match the prices on which routes, but I have had the best luck getting similar prices to Southwest on competitors that also fly nonstop flights on the sale routes. United in particular has been very good about matching the prices, though I have found matches on American Airlines as well.
As an example, here is United matching Southwest on the Houston – Memphis route.
However, the big caveat there is this is a Basic Economy fare, so to avoid the crazy United Basic Economy rules you will end up paying a bit more than Southwest wants for the same route. American is also matching on some routes, such as the Houston – Dallas route shown below, but in many cases it is not a Basic Economy fares since they aren’t as pervasive on American quite yet.
As always, Google Flights is a great way to quickly spot the lower fares on other airlines, though know that Southwest fares can only be found at Southwest.com. You can then book with the airline of your choice or on a site like Expedia.
I will also add that the lowest fares on Southwest and others seem to be disappearing much faster than I have seen in some previous years, so if you haven’t taken the time to look and book quite yet, I would get on that sooner rather than later as availability is already much worse on some routes today than it was yesterday.
I’d love to hear about the discounted fares you locked in on Southwest or another airline as a result of this sale!
