The Chase Freedom is one of my very favorite rewards cards that has no annual fee because it packs such a big earning punch with its rotating quarterly 5x bonus categories, up to the $1,500 quarterly max. We now know that the upcoming 2017 Chase Freedom third quarter 5x bonus categories will be restaurants and movie theaters! Movie theaters may not be that exciting to most of us, but restaurants are a popular bonus category since it counts not just sit-down restaurants, but also family friendly quick service and fast food places. This means your Sapphire Preferred or Reserve cards will get a bit of a break next quarter!

You do need to activate the quarterly bonus to earn the 5x points, which you can do starting today. You still have until June 30th to earn towards the second quarter bonus of grocery stores and drug stores assuming you already activated that bonus…and those are just about the easiest categories out there for families to max out!

Assuming you also have a premium Chase Ultimate Rewards card like the Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, Ink Plus, etc. then the points you earn on the Freedom transfer 1:1 to all of the Ultimate Rewards transfer partners including United, Southwest, Hyatt, British Airways, Marriott, and more. This ability is what makes the Freedom and its 5x earning power one of my very favorite cards with no annual fee since you can then take those easy 5x points and transfer them to Hyatt to book something like the 15,000 points per night Andaz Costa Rica!

What do you think of the new Chase Freedom 3rd quarter bonuses of restaurants and movie theaters – have you maxed out the second quarter 5x bonuses yet?

  1. Restaurants is always a good category but movie theaters not so much. It’s not like I’m dropping hundreds of dollars at the movies, well unless I buy popcorn 🙂

    Nice post btw.

    • Frank, sorry you had trouble commenting. It is just the first time from that IP so it goes into moderation until I manually approve.

  2. Any hope of Freedom adding “Warehouse Clubs” as a Q4 5x category? Was nice to have for several months last year, but has yet to appear for 2017.

  3. Hi Summer,

I’m just now getting my chase freedom as I downgraded from the CP. Given that I only have a couple of weeks for the Q2 Grocery bonus, am I able to buy gift cards at my local supermarket to MS the 1500? Does chase have an issue with this?

    Thanks,
    V
