Yesterday afternoon we learned that the new IHG PointBreaks preview list that will be valid for bookings and travel from July 31 – October 31, 2017, was going to be released today! Turns out it went live a tiny bit earlier than expected last night, but that is great news since it gives more time to plan out your potential bookings for just 5,000 IHG points per night instead of the usual 20,000 – 35,000+ points per night that many of these properties usually sell for outside of the PointBreaks dates. Note that you can’t make bookings at the 5,000 points per night rate yet – I expect that to give live as scheduled at some point on Monday the 31st.
New IHG Point Breaks for Summer and Fall Travel
The always helpful IHG PointBreaks Flyertalk thread seems to be generally agree that this list is less than exciting. However, I somewhat disagree. No, there isn’t an Intercontinental property in a super exciting city available for just 5,000 points per night, but there are still about 100 properties around the world that you can stay at for just 5,000 points per night, which is really pretty outstanding and unmatched by most other programs. You do need to be a little creative with the list and potentially stay a tad further away from the most popular sights and sounds, but that isn’t always a terrible thing…especially for the price.
Let’s look for a minute at some US properties on the list that happen to be located within a reasonable distance to Yellowstone National Park, a must visit destination in my view. The Candlewood Suites Idaho Falls is often near $150 a night in the late summer. It is located on the Snake River within an hour or two by car from Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. At just 5,000 points per night you could probably even spread out and get the family two rooms instead of just one!
As you make your way around that part of the country, you could also include a stay at the Holiday Inn Express Lander, Wyoming for just 5,000 points per night via this Point Breaks list. That hotel can approach close to $200 per night on some August dates. For those not familiar, Lander is southeast of Yellowstone and very close to the Wind River Indian Reservation, which also very much seems to be worth a visit. Neither Lander or Idaho Falls is right in Yellowstone, but both could be used as trip anchors and offer some very affordable hotel nights in that beautiful part of the country for just 5,000 points per night.
Here is the IHG PointBreaks list valid from July 31 – October 31, 2017. It is always possible it will shift a bit before it actually goes live on Monday.
HOLIDAY INN ZILINA
INTERCONTINENTAL BANDUNG DAGO PAKAR
Middle East & Africa
CROWNE PLAZA JOHANNESBURG – THE ROSEBANK
Central & South America
HOLIDAY INN REYNOSA-INDUSTRIAL PONIENTE
CROWNE PLAZA TUXPAN
HOLIDAY INN HOTEL & SUITES KAMLOOPS
HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS STELLARTON-NEW GLASGOW
While the prices aren’t nearly as good as when a sale is going on, you can purchase IHG points if you are in need. They also transfer in 1:1 from Chase Ultimate Rewards, though that process isn’t typically instant.
Are you going to be able to turn any of these properties into an affordable family vacation? Have you spotted any hidden gems on the list?
