Using miles and points for their initial intended purpose of securing hotels and flights is usually the best course of action in terms of a return on you ‘investment’, but every now and then there are exceptions to that usual rule. Using points for experiences can sometimes be a really good value, and often a bunch of fun. Using points for merchandise usually doesn’t offer a good return from a cents per point viewpoint, but there could be exceptions to that rule too if the price was right.
With that in mind, IHG has been offering auctions throughout the summer for things ranging from kayaks to NFL football tickets to Hawaiian vacations. I recently took a look at some the auctions they had running in August, the final month of the promo, and I was pretty impressed at what I saw.
For example, right now there is a really enticing package for travel to New York City that includes:
- 3-night stay at EVEN Hotels New York-Times Square South
- Airfare credit for two ($1000 value)
- $50 UBER credit to get you around town
- Aire Ancient Baths Yoga and Bath Experience for two.
- Meal at Hu Kitchen
- Meal at Cull & Pistol Oyster Bar
There are still eleven days until this particular auction closes, so I’m sure the bidding will go higher, but it is currently only 77,000 IHG points, which can sometimes be purchased for around $400 – $500, depending on when and how you buy. Clearly the package is worth way more than that. Only time will tell how high the bidding goes, but it is always free to keep an eye on it just in case others forget to bid.
There is another package closing in ten days that provides VIP access to the Circuit of The Americas in Austin this fall, and a two night stay at the InterContinental Stephen F. Austin and it is currently at just 11,000 points. I’m not personally into racing, but I know some folks go nuts for it, and the hotel alone would normally cost you 100,000 points for the two night stay…though it is sold out those dates if you tried to book through the normal channel.
If you want gear more than trips right now, then know that there are packages that include a kayak, GoPro, huge inflatable kid’s bouncy, and so much more. Again, there could end up being a flurry of bidding in the final days, but these auctions are probably worth at least keeping an eye on if you have IHG points to burn.
Have these IHG auctions been on your radar at all this summer?
