We have seen lots of increased airline credit card sign-up offers recently, but things have been quieter on the hotel co-branded front…until today. Now the two Hilton Amex cards have increased their sign-up bonuses for a limited time! One has no annual fee and one has the higher sign-up bonus plus an anniversary night to use in your second year of card membership. Both are considered individual products, so having one thankfully does not prevent you from having or getting the other.

Earn 100,000 Bonus Hilton Points + Weekend Anniversary Night

Hilton Honors™ Surpass® Card from American Express: 100,000 Hilton Honors points after you spend $3,000 on the card in the first 3 months. You also get a weekend award night after your first anniversary of card membership. There is a $75 annual fee with this card. Terms apply. Offer Ends 10/4/2017.

This is only the second time I can remember seeing the sign-up bonus this high, and I have never seen it higher. In addition to the 100,000 Hilton points after hitting the minimum spending requirement, and the weekend anniversary night you get after the first year, this card has some other perks, too. It awards:

  • 12X points on Hilton charges
  • 6X points at U.S. restaurants, U.S. supermarkets, and U.S. gas stations
  • 3X points for all other eligible purchases

This card also gives you Hilton Gold status which can score you complimentary breakfast and lounge access at some Hilton properties. If you put $40,000 in eligible purchases on the card in a calendar year then you get top tier Hilton Honors Diamond status through the end of the next calendar year.

Up to 75,000 Bonus Hilton Points and No Annual Fee

If you prefer a Hilton card with no annual fee, then there is another really solid option in the Hilton Honors Card.

Hilton Honors™ Card from American Express: 50,000 Hilton Honors bonus points after you spend $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months. Plus, earn an additional 25,000 bonus points after an additional $1,000 in purchases in the first 6 months. Offer expires on 10/4/2017. Terms Apply. No annual fee.

This card awards:

  • 7x points on Hilton charges
  • 5X points at U.S. restaurants, U.S. supermarkets, and U.S. gas stations
  • 3X points for all other eligible purchases

Get the Amex Hilton Card You Haven’t Had Before

The two cards are considered different products, so you can theoretically have both at the same time and should be able to get each sign-up bonus individually. However, each sign-up bonus is only available to those who have never had that specific product before. This means the best card to apply for is one that you haven’t had before. If you have already had one or the other, this makes your decision pretty easy.

Decide if the Annual Fee is Worth It

Up front the biggest difference between the two cards is that the Hilton Surpass Card has a $75 annual fee and the Hilton Honors Card has no annual fee. Not surprisingly, the Hilton Surpass Card also has a sign-up bonus that is 25,000 points higher than the Hilton Honors Card’s maximum bonus amount. Looking just at the initial bonus and the annual fee, paying the $75 annual fee for the Surpass Card gets you 25,000 more initial Hilton points at a “cost” of .3 cents each in the first year if you look at it in that way. I think most people are able to get more than .3 cents out of a Hilton Honors point, so I wouldn’t let the annual fee scare you too much.

Embassy Suites are great for family travelers

To put that into practical terms, I personally have had my eyes on some Hilton properties on The Big Island that seem to range from 30,000 – 50,000 Hilton Honors points per night, depending on the property and night. Paying 120,000-ish Hilton points for five nights with the fifth night free is suddenly very within range if you get 75,000 – 100,000 points via one of these sign-up bonuses!

Also remember that regardless of which card you decide on, Hilton Honors now offers the free pooling of points between up to eleven people! This could help if a couple folks in your circle decide to go for one of these temporarily increased bonuses and then want to pool the points together for a phenomenal trip!

I’ll post more on these offers in the coming weeks, but for now just note that you can get in on the increased Hilton Amex bonuses until October 4, 2017!

  1. I already had the Surpass card before, if i sign up again, i won’t received the bonus 100,000 points. But will i receive a free Hilton weekend night at the 1st anniversary?
