Hilton Weekend Award Night That Doesn’t Require $10,000 in Spending

Things in the rewards credit card space aren’t always that simple as there can be multiple versions of a program’s co-branded card, sometimes even issued by multiple banks. This was the case for the Hilton Honors co-branded cards as there were multiple fee and no annual fee versions of Hilton cards issued by multiple banks leading to lots of options…and lots of confusion. This situation was great for those who like to collect rewards from a variety of sources, but it has led to others understandably not being sure which reward goes with which product.

Hilton Weekend Award Night That Doesn’t Require $10,000 in Spending

This confusion is playing out for some in terms of temporarily increased bonus on the Hilton Honors™ Surpass® Card from American Express. This temporarily increased bonus not only upped the sign-up bonus points to 100,000 Hilton Honors points after you spend $3,000 on the card in the first three months, but it also includes a weekend anniversary night on the first cardmember anniversary.

Hilton Honors™ Surpass® Card from American Express

This weekend anniversary night is actually my favorite part of this temporarily increased bonus, but it is also seemingly the most confusing part as one of the (no longer issued) Citi Hilton cards also had a weekend anniversary night, but that one had a $10,000 annual spending requirement to trigger the award night. This has led to some thinking that the first anniversary award night from the Hilton Surpass Card’s temporary bonus also has an annual spending requirement, but that isn’t the case.

Hotel del Coronado

The only annual spending bonus requirement on the Hilton Surpass Card is if you want to earn top tier Hilton Diamond status from the card as that requires $40,000 on the card annually. Honestly, I wouldn’t stress about that much since the Hilton Gold status that comes with the card is pretty decent for most.

For the weekend anniversary award night on the Hilton Surpass that you can use at places like Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, Grand Wailea Waldorf Astoria Resort in Hawaii, Conrad New YorkWaldorf Hilton London, and the Waldorf Astoria Park City, all you have to do is keep the card until your first anniversary and pay the $75 annual fee….no $10,000 in annual spending required.

There are about 40 Hilton properties excluded from the weekend night certificates, and is made up primarily of the all-inclusive properties and the Hilton Grand Vacation properties. Otherwise, any Hilton property is fair game. Do note that this anniversary night is only awarded at the first anniversary roughly a year from when you get the card, and once it is awarded you have one year to use it.

Hopefully that helps clarify the details surrounding the annual weekend award night from the Hilton Surpass Card’s limited time sign-up bonus that is available until October 4, 2017. After that time the weekend award night will no longer be a part of the standard sign-up bonus.

Let me know if you have questions about the weekend anniversary award night or other components of the Hilton Surpass and I’ll do my best to get you some answers!

  1. Wish the bonus night offer would last a little longer. Need to apply for a Chase card when I go under 5/24 on 10/20. Not a fan of Hilton points but the big bonus combined with the free night would have gotten me to pull the trigger.

    • Totally understand it is all a balancing act. They did this offer once in the spring, so maybe they do it again. Fingers crossed!

  2. Is it worth to keep the card beyond the 2nd year (after using the free weekend night offer) by paying the $75 annual fee just for the gold status ? Or is it better to downgrade to the annual fee card ?

    • Ram, I think it just depends on how much value you are getting from Gold status. The good news is you will have a couple of years to get a good feel for that.

  3. I applied for this card last june and already got my bonus 100K pts. Would amex give me the free weekend night if I asked? Do you know of anyone that has done this?
