While I focus largely on earning miles and points with my rewards credit cards, I have nothing against cold hard cash back. In fact, I hear more and more people, even within miles and points circles, talking about focusing their everyday spending on cash back cards. If you fall into that camp, then you will want to know that two cash back cards just updated their sign-up bonuses. While they are both increased the statement credit you can earn after hitting the minimum spending requirements, only one is really a truly better offer than before, so let’s dig into what the two Blue Cash Amex Cards now have to offer.

New Amex Blue Cash Card Sign-Up Bonuses

There are two Amex Blue Cash Cards – one with an annual fee and one without. The one without an annual fee just upped its sign-up bonus from a $100 statement credit to a $150 statement credit after you spend $1,000 on purchases on the card in the first three months. The one with an annual fee just upped its sign-up offer from a $150 statement credit to a $200 statement credit after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months. However, the card with the annual fee previously had a $0 introductory annual fee the first year, and with this version of the offer, the $95 annual fee is not waived.

Comparing the Amex Blue Cash Cards

These cards are both pretty solid cards beyond the sign-up bonus, especially in the categories of US supermarkets, US gas stations, and select US department stores.

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express offers 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1%), 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores, and then 1% back on other purchases. If you spend $6,000 per year on eligible grocery purchases on this card, at 6% cash back that would mean $360 cash back on that $6,000 in groceries each year! I don’t know of a card that offers a higher percentage of cash back on groceries than this card.

The no annual fee Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express offers bonus cash back in the same categories as the Blue Cash Preferred, but just at a lower rate. This card offers 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1%), 2% cash back at U.S. gas stations and at select U.S. department stores, and 1% back on other purchases. If you max out the grocery category at 3% cash back, that would come to $180 cash back on $6,000 in groceries.

The current list of approved “select US department stores” where you will earn bonus cash back on both cards includes:

• Bealls
• Belk
• Bloomingdale’s
• Bon Ton Stores
• Boscov’s
• Century 21 Department Stores
• Dillard’s
• J.C. Penney (JCP)
• Kohl’s
• Lord & Taylor
• Macy’s
• Neiman Marcus
• Nordstrom
• Saks Fifth Avenue
• Sears
• Stein Mart

Both of these cards would also be eligible for money-saving Amex Offers and assuming you aren’t overly stressed with Chase 5/24 rules, then both of these cards really do have their strengths, especially for families who spend a fair amount in the bonus categories. Do be aware that the terms for each card indicate that the welcome bonus offer is not available to applicants who have or have had this product, though each card is considered a separate product.

Do you have either of the Amex Blue Cash cards in your wallet? How do they fit into your overall spending strategy?
