Make One Purchase Get a Southwest Companion Pass – Targeted

I have seen some pretty outstanding credit card sign-up bonuses in my time in this hobby, but this one that  just shared with me on Twitter has to be one of the coolest. While the sign-up bonus points you get from the Southwest credit cards have historically counted towards the 110,000 Rapid Reward points you need to earn in a calendar year to secure the Southwest Companion Pass, it always takes at least two credit card sign-up bonuses to get the 110,000 needed points, so that isn’t always in-range for everyone, especially with the Chase 5/24 rules.

However, this awesome brand new (and sadly, targeted) Southwest sign-up bonus gets you a Companion Pass with just one Southwest card account approval and one purchase on the card! It looks like this is a targeted offer to lucky folks in California, so we can’t all hop on this one.

With this crazy offer, not only do you get the Companion Pass until the end of 2018 with one purchase on the card, but you reportedly still also get 40,000 sign-up bonus points after spending $1,000 on the card in the first three months. The offer expires on 11/30/17, and the Southwest cards are typically subject to 5/24 rules.

I don’t have a link to share as they seem to populate with the intended recipients’ name, but absolutely be on the lookout in your inbox for this offer, especially if you live in California.

According to Reddit, here are the terms of the offer:

This product is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of any Rapid Rewards Credit Card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of any Rapid Rewards Credit Card who received a new cardmember bonus for a Rapid Rewards Credit Card within the last 24 months. Only the Rapid Rewards® Member who received this email/offer from Southwest Airlines® is eligible for this promotion. Offer is nontransferable. To qualify for this offer, (a) Member must have a valid California address as evidenced by their application for the Rapid Rewards® Credit Card, (b) Member must open a Rapid Rewards® Credit Card by November 30, 2017 and (c) please allow up to eight weeks for Companion Pass to be fulfilled after making first purchase. To be eligible for this offer, account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. Promotional Companion Pass is valid from the time promotion qualifications are met, through December 31, 2018. Promotional Companion Pass entitles Member to designate a Companion to fly for free (does not include taxes and fees from $5.60 one way) anywhere with the Member on the same Southwest Airlines flight that is purchased (with cash or points) by the Member. Please allow up to 15 business days after qualifying for promotional Companion Pass to receive your notification to designate your Companion. Promotional Companion Pass travel is subject to the government-imposed September 11th Security Fee of $5.60 per one-way trip and any foreign government taxes/fees if traveling internationally, all of which must be paid by credit card when the reservation is made. Any additional tax liability, if imposed, is the responsibility of the Companion Pass traveler. If Companion Pass is earned by flying 100 qualifying one-way flights or earning 110,000 qualifying points in the calendar year while qualified for promotional Companion Pass through December 31, 2018, the regular Companion Pass qualifications will supersede the promotional Companion Pass, entitling the Member to Companion Pass through December 31, 2019. Visit Southwest.com® to review the full Companion Pass program rules and regulations. All Rapid Rewards rules and regulations apply and can be found at Southwest.com/rrterms.

I would love to hear if you are targeted for this offer and big virtual high-fives if you go for it and get approved for over a year of a Southwest Companion Pass with just one purchase on your new card!

  1. Got targted and am seriously thinking of signing up. Got a promo last year to get the Companion Pass after completing 5 round trip flights and it has saved us lots of money in flying this year. Our daughter turns 2 this November, so having the companion pass for another year would be super helpful in keeping costs down.

    • To follow up, I was targeted last year for taking 10 flights that either originate in or finish in California to earn the Companion Pass and was targeted this time as well. I’ve got a couple other people that got the email and one other person oddly did not.

  2. On the same day I received the Southwest offer for the companion pass I also received a targeted mail offer from American Express for a 50,000 points offer after spending $2,000 in 3 months. It did not say that you could not get the offer if you have already received it in the past which I have. I called them to verify that I would indeed be eligible and was told that I would since it was a targeted offer mailed to me and not a flyer I saw or an online offer. Since I am over 5/24 and probably wouldn’t be approved for the Southwest companion offer I think I will jump on this American Express Gold Card offer. Not a bad day for a points junkie!!

  3. My dad got targeted for this, not mom, neither did my husband. I already have the CP and was also not targeted. We all fly more than he does. Going to tell dad to go for it!

  4. I got the offer and had the companion pass last year and am in California. Other extended family members didn’t get it.
I am excited and will probably go for it.
