I wasn’t online much yesterday while we were traveling, so I missed Day One of the three-day big Southwest sale, but luckily it is still going on today and tomorrow. This is not your run-of-the-mill weekly “sale”, but this is one of their big twice per year sales where Southwest puts seats on sale from just $49 each way. In my experience, they usually do these sales once in June and October. The price you paid used to be directly tied to the distance flown and even though that association isn’t as direct as it used to be, it can still be noticed on many routes if you look hard enough.

With this sale, you must book by Thursday, October 12, 2017, and of course seats, travel days, and markets are limited. The sale is valid for domestic travel valid from 10/31/2017 – 12/19/2017 and 1/3/2018 – 2/14/2018. Travel to/from San Juan, Puerto Rico is valid 10/31/2017 – 12/7/2017 & 1/16/2018 – 3/1/2018. International travel is valid 10/31/2017 – 12/13/2017 and 1/10/2018 – 3/2/2018.

As an example of what you can book via these sales, you can fly on eligible dates from Houston Hobby to Austin, Dallas, Corpus, Harlingen, Memphis, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, and Tulsa from $49 each way. If you look hard enough you can notice the distance variable still at play with which destinations are within this $49 range. If you are paying with points that means you can fly those routes from 2,290 points + $5.60 each way.

Remember that with Southwest you can also rebook your existing flights if the price drops. If you paid with dollars you can get a credit to use on a future flight within a year of your original booking, or you can get a refund of the points difference if you booked using Rapid Reward points.

If you are looking to get another passport stamp, you can also use this sale to fly internationally with prices as low as:

  • Ft. Lauderdale – Nassau 2,880 + $5.60
  • Houston – Cancun 2,880 + $33.68
  • Houston – Aruba 7,661 + $15.60
  • Denver – Puerto Vallarta 5,184 + $33.68

Go enjoy the water of The Bahamas from 2,880 points + $5.60

If you put your Southwest Companion Pass to good use then two can fly for those points prices, with just two sets of taxes/fees required. If Southwest isn’t your airline of choice, others such as United and American have matched the sale prices on many routes, though in my searches those $49 seats on competitor airlines were the dreaded Basic Economy fares.

Were you able to book or even just reprice any flights thanks to this big Southwest $49 sale?

  1. I can never, ever find those cheap flights going into/out of Pittsburgh. I don’t know if it’s the dates I’m trying for or the locations I’m checking out, or if they don’t bother putting Pittsburgh on sale, or if I’m just not spending enough time changing all the variables I can think of, but it’s gotten to the point where I just delete the “$49 sale!” e-mails because they’re just a time-suck for me.

  2. @betty – pgh flyer too. Pgh never on sale because there is no competition. Stinks. Though there is that awesome pgh to aruba deal for like 15k skymiles through the end of year.
