We just got back last night from an amazing trip to the Bahamas (more on that soon!), and all four of our flights on this trip were paid for using Delta SkyMiles booked during one of their monthly flash sales. We got a tremendous deal for our Delta miles when we booked that trip and honestly, I think that was the moment when I adjusted my perspective on Delta SkyMiles. Ignore the noise that they aren’t that valuable because they can be extremely valuable for certain trips and no type of mile is perfect for everything. One time that their value really shines is when you can hop on one of their monthly flash sales like we did, and now a new SkyMiles flash sale has just started.

This month’s flash sale offers one-way flights to/from LaGuardia and JFK airports in New York City from cities in the Lower 48 from just 5,500 SkyMiles each way. Delta, unfortunately, doesn’t publish an award chart, but if they did it would probably say that a standard domestic round trip is usually 25,000 SkyMiles. During this flash sale the starting price ranges from 11,000 – 20,000 SkyMiles per round trip, depending on your departure city. Of course, not all dates will have this pricing available, but there are many dates from November 1 – December 14, 2017, with the discounted award pricing. Not surprisingly, there are some sale blackout dates around Thanksgiving on November 17-19, 21-22, and 26-28.

However, if you can avoid those dates and fly on a slightly off date on the week of Thanksgiving, like on Thanksgiving or even the day after, you can fly for as few as 5,500 SkyMiles from Miami – New York or similar!

Here are the round trip starting prices for some routes I tested, and yes the prices also work in reverse leaving from NYC.

  • Austin – New York 18,000 SkyMiles
  • Denver – New York 16,000 SkyMiles
  • Houston – New York 20,000 SkyMiles
  • Los Angeles – New York 20,000 SkyMiles
  • Miami – New York 11,000 SkyMiles
  • Orlando – New York 11,000 SkyMiles
  • Seattle – New York 18,000 SkyMiles
  • South Bend – New York 20,000 SkyMiles
  • Washington DC – New York 11,000 SkyMiles

To get the discounted award prices you must book by11:59 PM ET on October 12th, 2017. I think I have flown more segments on Delta this year than any other airline, and I have found them to be a very solid airline in the sky. When you get also get their award tickets at a great price, they are hard to beat. My girls were (mostly) all smiles on our recent Delta flights with their Biscoff cookies and on-time arrivals!
