The most anticipated aviation announcement in years took a couple of ticks longer than we thought it might to be announced, but that’s okay because Southwest Airlines is officially officially going to be selling tickets to Hawaii in 2018! They didn’t say passengers flights will actually take off next year, but my money is on passengers being in the air at some point in 2018.
Yesterday evening at their employee Spirit Party in California, they announced that they intend to fly to Southwest from multiple cities in California. They did not yet announce route specifics other than a 2018 timeline and that flights will operate from California and that they will start with their ETOPS-equipped -800 fleet and will work towards getting ETOPS certification on their new MAX aircraft that will ultimately be their longterm aircraft for Hawaii. That may not paint the total picture, but it is more than enough information to start the celebrations!
As expected, Southwest has also already confirmed on Twitter that your Companion Pass will work to bring your flying partner with you to the islands for just the cost of taxes, so if you weren’t serious about Southwest before, this may be a great time to get serious!
I’m so very excited by this formal announcement and can’t wait to learn more about Southwest’s specific plans for my very favorite islands in the coming months! Now, who all is ready to use their Rapid Reward points to head to Hawaii?!
