If you don’t want to spend money on “things” this shopping season, but would rather help yourself or a loved one get ready for a miles and points fueled travel adventure, then you could consider buying them (or yourself) miles or points at a discounted rate. All of the programs listed below have a limited time discount or bonus available on purchased miles, though note that some of the exact bonus amounts may be slightly targeted, so be sure to log in to your account and look at the details closely before hitting the buy button.

The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN

I don’t personally consider any of these prices “drop everything and buy now”, but all are discounted over the regular price and can make sense in select situations. You often have to be a program member for at least a week or two to make a purchase, but you should have time to join now and purchase within that window with most of these offers.

Hyatt

Get up to a 40% bonus on the number of points purchased through December 15, 2017, which drops the per point price to as low as about 1.7 cents per point. To get the full 40% bonus you must purchase at least 30,000 points for $720, which with the 40% bonus would become 42,000 points.

Andaz Papagayo Costa Rica 15k points per night

Alaska Airlines

Earn up to a 40% bonus on 40,000+ purchased miles, which brings the price down to about 2.11 cents per mile. The highest offer I remember seeing with Alaska was a 50% bonus, and I believe that one was targeted. Valid through December 28, 2017.

IHG

Receive up to a 100% bonus on purchased points through December 8, 2017. To get the full 100% purchase amount, you must purchase 20,000 points with a 20,000 point bonus. This drops your per point price to about 6/10 of a cent.

At this purchase rate, a 5,000 points per night Point Breaks room would cost you $30 per night.

Starwood Preferred Guest

Get a 35% discount on purchased SPG points until December 29, 2017, beginning on purchases of 5,000 points or more. Remember to use your Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card for this purchase to earn 2x SPG points on the charge. I have seen this discount go as high as 50% off, though that was a targeted bonus and 35% off is a solid SPG discount these days.

Westin Grand Cayman from 9.6k SPG points per night

American Airlines

This weekend, you can get an additional 20% bonus on purchased or gifted American AAdvantage miles, up to 120,000 bonus miles, when you purchase before November 27, 2017. To get the lowest price, you have to purchase 150,000 miles with a 120,000 mile bonus at a final price of 1.77 cents per mile. Accounts do have to be at least 30 days old in order to buy or gift miles. I have seen the price for AAdvantage miles go slightly lower than this, though not by much.
