While we do of course give (too many?) gifts to our girls and others around the holiday, I think most of us have more than enough stuff, so giving experiences instead of things is often my favorite type of gift. However, you can’t always gift someone a trip to Disney World, but sometimes you can take a hybrid approach and give things that will make experiences you know they are going to have even a little more fun or special.
We’ve been lucky enough to take a number of family trips to the Disney family of theme parks over the years, and it is one of those trips where having themed outfits, wearing princess dresses, and more can really take the excitement up a notch or two before, during, and even after the trip. It may look strange for a family of four to walk down Main Street in your town with matching cartoon character shirts, but at Disney, matching gear on Main Street USA is certainly more than appropriate.
In light of the holidays, if you are shopping for your family or one that you know has a Disney trip in their future, here are some of my favorite splurges to have on hand for a Mickey-loving family.
Non-itchy washable princess dresses
Do not, I repeat do not purchase a princess dress at a big chain store and expect things to go well if your child is at all sensitive to itchy fabrics. On the other hand, I’ve never heard a single complaint about the comfort of the dresses from the Little Dress Up Shop. They are soft, glitter-free, non-itchy, easy to put on, machine washable, and come in lots of sizes. As an added bonus, they have all sorts of discounts and sales on their website and US orders ship fast and free.
I sound like an ad, but I have zero affiliation with this site (or any others in this post) other than being a very happy repeat customer. Their princess dresses are not only kid-friendly, but also really cute and hold up well enough to be passed down from kid to kid. These really are a great gift whether a Disney trip is in the immediate future or not.
If princess dresses aren’t on anyone’s wish list, they also have Star Wars costumes, superhero accessories, cloaks, capes, and basically anything a dress-up costume box could desire.
Comfy Disney Toddler Shoes
My very favorite type of shoes for crawlers and toddlers are Freshly Picked Mocs. I would guess that my two-year-old has had about 10 pairs in her lifetime, and we loved them all. They are soft but stay on so you don’t have to worry about clunky or uncomfortable shoes on the plane or around town. They do get dirty on the bottom since they are just soft leather, but you can wipe them with their leather wipes and a little dirt adds to their character since it results in a sweet footprint on the bottom. By the time they really look tired, you are probably on to the next size anyway…that said, I wouldn’t wear them when you think they will get super wet or dirty.
I’ve written about these favorite toddler travel shoes of mine before, but now they are launching a whole new line of Disney themed mocs that I would 100% purchase if we had an upcoming Disney trip. Heck, I have my eye on a pair even without an upcoming Disney trip!
Soft Disney leggings
Making sure kids are comfortable during travel is just about the most important thing you can do, so I often like to put my girls in some type of soft leggings for most flights so they can curl up on the plane and have one less potential issue to worry about. Right before our last Disney trip, LuLaRoe, the company you may know for their soft leggings, launched a Disney collection. While I don’t personally wear tons of colorful leggings myself (black and navy leggings are an entirely different story!), I had to order a pair for each of us for our last Disney trip. They were fun and comfortable for the short flight to Orlando though a little too warm for a July trip into the parks.
As you can see, the girls had no problem putting the leggings into play mode around our resort once we got there. I’m also happy to report that six months later the leggings have held up great and they still wear them pretty regularly. Mine may not see that much action outside the confines of Disney, but they are still tons of fun.
If you don’t know someone in your area who sells LuLaRoe, my friend Michelle (Ed from Pizza in Motion’s wife) always has tons of great pieces and I’m sure would be happy to hook you up with some very soft Disney-themed leggings or tops for your upcoming Disney adventure.
Disney Gift Cards
Last but certainly not least, a great present for someone with an upcoming Disney trip is a Disney gift card. In my view gift cards are not impersonal, but instead are very thoughtful in that you are putting exactly what the other person will want or need ahead of picking something that may be hit or miss. Of course, you can also earn some points for yourself in the process since Disney Gift Cards are often sold at office supply or grocery stores where many rewards credit cards can earn bonus points. If you play it right, this could mean 5x points for you, and more money to spend on Dole Whip ice cream, Mickey pins, Mickey ears, character meals, and so much more for them. You can also often find Disney gift cards available at a small discount at Sam’s Club.
I remember my parents giving my old school Disney Dollars for a trip I was taking right after Christmas back in college and it was the perfect gift!
While this post is Disney specific as Disney puts such a big smile on so many faces, I plan to do another more non-Disney family traveler gift guide later this week. What kind of gifts are you scooping up this year for the Disney-loving and other travelers in your life this holiday season?
