There are two big events today for those with a Chase Freedom Card, as it is both the deadline to activate the Chase Freedom 4th quarter 5x bonus categories, and we also learn what the 1st quarter 2018 5x Chase Freedom bonuses will be!

First, if you haven’t already activated the 2017 4th Quarter 5x bonuses of department stores and Walmart, you can do that now. The 5x bonus points will be retroactive to October 1st as long as you activate by today, up to the $1,500 quarterly max. Remember that the Walmart category is actually even better than just 5x as paying for via Chase Pay on your Freedom earns you 10x points on up to $325 spent through today (December 14th).

Next, the big new information of the day is that the 2018 1st quarter Chase Freedom 5x bonuses will be:

  • Gas Stations
  • Internet/Cable/Phone Services
  • Chase Pay, Android Pay, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay

The exact details of the 5x bonuses beyond the first quarter of 2018 aren’t yet fully announced. The first quarter internet/cable/phone bonus doesn’t personally interest me as I already get 5x on those charges via my Ink Plus, though it is easy bonus points for those without an Ink card that awards a bonus in those categories. Gas stations are a useful bonus category for many of us, though right now we (thankfully) aren’t averaging $500 per month in gas purchases, so that alone wouldn’t get us to the $1,500 quarterly max. However, the brand new mobile payments category that includes Chase Pay and Apple Pay is pretty interesting and very useful.

You can check out using Chase Pay at retailers such as Walmart, Best Buy, ShopRite, eBags, Starbucks, and more. Apple Pay can be used at places such as Babies R Us, Chevron, Dunkin Donuts, FireHouse, Gap, J. Crew, Jamba Juice, McDonalds, Luby’s, Macys, Panera, Petsmart, Starbucks, Walgreens, Walt Disney World, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and many more retailers.

The mobile payment 5x bonus category should unlock the ability to earn 5x Ultimate Reward points at a whole variety of places ranging from department stores, to restaurants, to grocery stores, and more. If you’ve never used mobile payments, now is a good time to take the few minutes to set it up! If this is new to you, here’s a guide on Apple Payments to get you going.
