The Excitement of Planning a “Once in a Lifetime Trip” to Alaska

Mountains

My dad, Buddy, AKA “Grandpa Points” has a love for travel as fierce as mine, yet our travel patterns are distinctly different.  He and my mom are now in their mid-60’s, are (mostly) retired, and are ticking off “bucket list” destinations quicker than they ever thought possible thanks to miles, points, and travel deals.  They have an intense love of this country, of its National Parks and treasures, and have no problem with a clean budget hotel room and an…

Tips for Using Miles to Get to Alaska in Summer 2015

I have recently written about my family’s fantastic summer 2014 trip to Alaska, and part of that series was a post about why a trip to Alaska should not be put off until “one day” – it needs to be taken now.  This is both because Alaska was just that awesome for those who love enjoying natural outdoor adventure and beauty, but also because of the reality that you will be able to take advantage of more that Alaska has…

Using Hotel Points to Save on Trips to Alaska

Alaskan Adventure Awaits

My biggest take-away from our recent trip to Alaska is that it is a trip not to be put off any longer than necessary as Alaska is a Colorado-on-steroids-minus the hipsters-1950’s style-outdoor adventures-utopia.  This means that folks were actually using rest stops to picnic and play, camping along the way, packing their lunches, actually talking to each other, putting down electronics, and enjoying the absolutely breath-taking scenery at every turn.  For most of us Alaska is pretty far away, just…

How to Use Airline Miles to Get to Alaska

To wrap up my series on Alaska I’m going to cover some good ways to to use airline miles to get there.  While booking a trip to Alaska on miles isn’t near as complex as booking an around-the-world journey or similar, there are still several different options to get there with some choices costing fewer miles than others.  I’m pretty passionate about how amazing of a destination Alaska is for families, so if you want to get a taste of…

Log Cabins, Horse Rides, and Gold Panning in Alaska

Alaska, North to the Future, The Land of The Midnight Sun, The Last Frontier, the location of one of our favorite family trips of all time.  While we absolutely used hotel points to keep the cost of the trip to a minimum, we weren’t about to go to the Last Frontier and only stay in traditional chain hotels.  There is a time for hotel points, and there is a time for a log cabin.  Our two nights in Cooper Landing,…

Family Friendly Activities and Restaurants in Seward, Alaska

Our recent early summer trip to Alaska with the family was simply incredible, and I can’t say enough nice words about the people who live in that state and make it great.  Of course, the gorgeous views and family friendly outdoor activities don’t hurt either.  In this post I will focus on the family friendly eats and activities we experienced in and around Seward. In case you missed one, here are the other posts from our Alaskan Adventure. Flying Seven…

Fun Things for Families In and Around Anchorage

Heading to Alaska with a family is like heading to one of the biggest playgrounds in the world, assuming your crew likes outdoor adventures.  It’s the perfect spot for a family vacation.  I didn’t plan much for our family to do in Alaska in advance as I knew there was such a plethora of activities that we could successfully play it by ear based on what sounded fun. In fact, I have found that when traveling with a young kid,…

Holiday Inn Express Seward, Alaska Review

Our recent Alaskan family adventure was absolutely amazing, and if your family is adventurous, enjoys nature, or wildlife, or awesome views, then you seriously need to plan a trip to Alaska.  You probably won’t want to do your entire Alaskan adventure using miles and points since there are some pretty neat non-chain places to stay, but you can certainly do a portion of your journey using miles and points to keep costs down.  One of the places we used points…

Don’t Wait Until You’re Retired to go to Alaska

We are currently in Alaska on an amazing family vacation. One really unique aspect of this trip has been that fellow tourists and locals alike seem to really enjoy talking to each other.  It’s sad, but on many trips, we don’t end up coming across many people who just want to chat about their travels.  Here we have hardly seen a person who didn’t want to just stop and chat about where they’re going and where they’ve been.  It’s different.…

Alaskan Hotels Need to Learn From Las Vegas Casinos

I think a meeting of the minds is in order for the hotel owners in Alaska, and the folks that run the big casino hotels and resorts in Las Vegas.  It might seem to be a very strange pairing, but one that makes a bunch of sense in one respect.  You see, folks in Vegas often party it up until late and night and consequently sleep through the bright hours of the morning.  Alaska visitors often just want to sleep…
