The 88,000 Mile Business Class Round Trip Award to Europe

The airline award chart game is always changing, and one of my favorite award charts took a big hit earlier this month. The United MileagePlus program didn’t exactly change the actual prices of awards on their chart with this change, but they seriously altered the routing and stopover rules effectively devaluing awards for folks who like to maximize building in as many flights as possible into one award. I still really like United, but as I turn my sights to the…

Positive Outcome When Seeking Airline Reimbursement

After 2 months, success!

Back in February my husband and I spent some time on the beach in Jamaica only to have chaos set-in as we concluded our trip and started to make the journey back home to our kiddo.  We had booked our award tickets for 22,000 ANA miles each round trip on a mix of Star Alliance partners United and Copa.  Our outbound flights operated by United had been totally without incident, but when we tried to check-in at the airport in…

New ANA Award Chart: Europe for 88K in Business Class

ANA plane

The new ANA award chart is slated to go live today (though the booking site seems to be down when I tried it this morning), so I want to dig a little deeper into some of the different award chart prices since ANA is both a Star Alliance member and a American Express Membership Rewards transfer partner.  I know it takes some extra time and patience to learn a bit about some of these foreign frequent flyer programs, but I…

Last Chance to Book via This Distance Based Award Chart

2015 ANA Award Chart

Big changes are coming to the ANA Mileage Club award chart and rules this weekend (effective April 12th), so this is your last call to get in on one of my very favorite Star Alliance award charts before it undergoes some pretty massive changes going from a distance based chart to a zone based chart. The new ANA award chart first came out in November, but it was in Japanese, and a little light on exact details.  I plan to…

Staring at a Departure Board Trying to Get Home

This week we joined a few friends to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in Jamaica.  It is a special treat to be able to experience different places with friends, so we jumped at the chance to join them.  We stayed two nights at a small hotel in Negril, and then two nights at the brand new Hyatt all-inclusive in Montego Bay – sneak peek here! However, this post isn’t about Jamaica exactly, it is about trying to get out of…

Upgrading for Free on a United Flight Booked with ANA Miles

Yesterday I flew on one of my favorite current mileage currencies, ANA Mileage Club miles.  These are miles you can get by transferring 1:1 your American Express Membership Reward points from cards like The Amex EveryDay Credit Card from American Express to ANA, which is a Japanese airline in the Star Alliance.  You can then book award flights on Star Alliance partners such as United, Copa, and others. ANA’s award chart will be changing in a couple months, but you…

New Award Chart Coming: Europe in Business Class 72,000 Miles!

ANA plane

Via Travel is Free, it seems that ANA has some pretty big award chart changes coming for us.  So far the changes are just written in Japanese, so I am going off some very basic Google Translate features here with this interpretation.  For example, Professor Google has taught me that ビジネスクラス means “business class” in Japanese, and that was enough to tell me that North America – Europe will be 72,000 miles round trip in business class, which was enough to…

How to Save 5,000 Miles on Many United Award Flights

I think that there are a disproportionate number of articles and posts written on ways to save miles on award flights operated by OneWorld airlines compared to Star Alliance airlines.  From the BA distance based award charts, to the 10% back on American Airlines redeemed miles with certain credit cards, to the monthly Ciit AAdvantage discounted mileage cities, and the 5,000 mileage discount on US operated award flights with the US Airways card, there are really lots of ways to…

How to Fly to the Carribean for Fewer Miles and Get Free Stopovers

A few months ago I wrote about how the next award chart sweet spot I wanted to use was via Star Alliance partner ANA as you can get to the Caribbean and back from many cities in the United States for only 22,000 miles round trip.  Even better than that, you can even have multiple free stopovers in some situations!  Recently the situation presented itself to put this sweet spot into action as we have a wedding to attend in…

The Next Award Chart Sweet Spot I Want to Use: ANA for United Operated Flights

I’m sure most of us have several vacations spots on “our list” that we are just trying to figure out how to book most effectively or how to squeeze into our busy schedules.  Sitting at the top of my list is Costa Rica, and specifically staying at the Andaz Peninsula Papagayo which looks to be a great property in a good spot.  I have seen some solid cash rates there, but on points it is also great as a Category…
