Why Am I Still Not Booking A Flight to Australia?

I have wanted to use airline miles to go to Australia and New Zealand for years. And years. And years. I fact, this was my goal redemption with the US Airways miles I was earning back during the big US Airways Grand Slam promotion years ago… that many of you probably don’t even remember because it has been so long and that promotion and frequent flyer program no longer even exist. I’ve had some great trips with my miles since…

Business Class Award Availability to Sydney on New United Houston Flight!

Update: The really good award availability has now disappeared. Congrats to those who got in quickly! Years ago we were told that a United operated Houston – Auckland flight was in the works, but that never came to pass. Fingers were pointed at Southwest’s international expansion at Hobby as part of the reason why that flight never materialized, but I never quite figured out how Southwest’s flights to Cabo interfered with a United flight to New Zealand. However, I’m clearly not…

Book Now: American Saver Business Class Awards to Australia!

Update: I’ve seen some reports that most (or all?) of these seats are now gone and the system is now acting glitchy catching up making it look like phantom award space. Congrats if you scored seats in time! Getting multiple premium cabin saver level award tickets from the United States to Australia is very, very hard and requires a good amount of luck, flexibility, creative routing, etc. It can be done – heck I’ve done it (before I canceled it),…

Multiple Business and First Class Awards to Australia Available!

American Airlines has announced that their award chart is changing effective March 22, 2016. Among other things this means that saver awards to the South Pacific and Australia in business class are going up from by 17,500 miles each way from 62,500 – 80,000 miles in business class. Of course business class awards to Australia have historically been very hard to secure using American miles anyway, but there was hope that the newly launched American operated flights from Los Angeles…

New Way to Get to New Zealand on Miles

You might have heard that getting your family to Australia or New Zealand on miles is about a tough of an award as it gets, especially if you want to fly in a premium cabin.  It can be done, but it takes persistence, flexibility, and luck to pull it off. Well the good news is that there is going to be another way to get to New Zealand on miles beginning this July! United Airlines will operate service from San…

Award Space on New American Airlines Flight to Australia

As I shared here, American Airlines is launching new service between LAX and Sydney beginning on December 17th via a code-share with Qantas using a 777-300ER with lie-flat seats in first and business class.  The flight goes on sale today, and not only does that mean you can purchase a ticket if you are in the market for paying with cash, but award seats are now available as well. Well, technically award seats are available, but if you are looking…

Success! Securing Business Class Award Availability from Australia!

Y’all, we did it.  We found premium cabin award space to and from Australia for next spring for our family without going through Asia, splitting up the group, taking crazy routings, paying fuel surcharges, or really doing anything fancy at all (other than flying to/from Australia in business class which by itself is insanely fancy).  After three years or more of wanting to book this trip, I’m just in some kind of shock that we did it. Premium Cabin Award…

Why I Drained My United Account Today

I have been talking about using miles to go to Australia and/or New Zealand since at least the US Airways Grand Slam in 2011.  However, in the years since, despite countless trips to many other amazing places, I still haven’t managed to make it to Australia or New Zealand.  Tight award availability in premium cabins for multiple seats has certainly been part of the problem, as has bad timing, unforeseen circumstances, and just simply putting it off in favor of…
